Crew 31 of the 315BW, 16BG, 16 SQ - 07/19/2002 01:33:37 PM
My Dad, 1LT Bernard Kjelstad, was a Navigator in crew 31 of the 315BW/16BG/16SQ stationed at Guam's Northwest Field from June 1945 until approximately November 1945. The pilot's name was Maj. Sam Roberts (AC), and the B-29 was named the "Grym Gryphon". Other crew members included: 1Lt Phillip Brogan (P), F/O Ward H. Schaefer (B), 1Lt Herbert Martin (RO), M/Sgt Edgar L. Goebel (FE), Sgt Oresta Boone (EMG), S/Sgt Paul Schive (ROM), S/Sgt Theron Bower (AG), Sgt. Samuel Behar (TG). Does anyone in this forum remember this crew or know of the current location of any of these crew mwmbers? Gary Kjelstad Son of 1Lt Bernard Kjelstad, Navigator [signature]

Gary...have you tried : [url "http://www.whitepages.com/"]www.whitepages.com/[/url] ? I found my copilot's widow and my tail gunner using the whitepages. I had about 30 names...your names may vary in number. Jim :-) [signature]

I was a navigator in the 15th Sq. My AC was a good friend of Sam Roberts... [signature]

Harold, Found your name and picture in crew #6 if the 15th SQ in the 16th BG History Book. In your response to my post from last July, you indicated your AC knew Sam Roberts. Do you have any information on Sam's residence or if he is still living today? Gary Kjelstad

Gary, I saw your post and saw that you made mention of the 16th BG History Book. My grandfather SSGT Edward G. Siarkowicz was 315 BW, 16th BG, 17th Sq. I was hoping that you may be able to look in the book to see what crew he was listed under and if there were any photos. As well, is this history book something current or is this a vintage item? Thanks. Edward C. Siarkowicz [signature]

Col. Sam Roberts (Maj. Sam Roberts) currently resides in Missoula, MT.  If you contact the University of Montana's ROTC program, I'm sure that they will provide you with more information.
