Crash of B-17 42-97259 at Havelte (The Netherlands) - 07/26/2008 12:35:39 PM
Hi,

I'm searching for information and photo's about the crew of B-17 (42-97259) that crashed at Havelte (the Netherlands on May 8th,1944.
All members of this plane were killed in action (367th Bomber Squadron/306th Bomber Group-Heavy)

Can someone tell me more about the fate of this plane and the crew ?
Does there excists a crewphoto ?
Does there excist a photo from the crashsite ?

I hope that someone on this forum is able to answer these questions and perhaps can help me with a photo.

All information and help will be very appreciated.
Looking forward to hear from someone.

Hi Jan,

42-97259 GY Q (no name listed) failed to return due to flak. Project Bits and Pieces shows the crash site to be Steenwijk, The Netherlands. I don't know how that relates to Havelte. The MACR 4556 should give you some information about the crew and is probably available online at www.footnote.com.

Crew list:
2Lt Darvin A. Smith (P)
2Lt Arthur E. Camosy (CP)
2Lt Claude R. Hawkins (N)
2Lt Anthony J. Laura (B)
Sgt Maynard M. Miller (TT)
S/Sgt Jack W. Childers (RO)
Sgt George E. Krieckhaus (BT)
Sgt William D. Holder (LW)
S/Sgt Eugene E. Wright (RW)
Sgt Robert P. Granberg (TG)

There could be a picture of the plane and/or crew on the 306th BG website.

Hi Vic,

Thanks for the info,I have this MACR.
I could this MACR from a friend in the Netherlands,it contains 18 Pages.
Can you tell me if this is correct.

In the MACR is mentioned that the plane crashed 1 km west of Havelte.
Eyewitnesses in Havelte have told me that this plane crashed in Havelte.
So,I hope that someone on this forum can confirm these stories.

Looking forward to hear from you again.

Kind regards,
Jan de Wilde

Jan,

I would take the information listed in the MACR as being correct. There are many instances in Project Bits and Pieces when the crashsite is different than in other sources, sometimes correct and othertimes, incorrect. I wouldn't hazard guess about this one but possibly the crashsite indicated was the result of witness accounts from other aircraft in the area since all the crew were KIA.
