Crash C47 in South-East of France 1944
Hello ! I'm French (I am too on the 324th Fighter group for the 314th Fighter squadron) & I'm looking for inquiries about an unknown member of the following plane : - Douglas C-47, coded K, serial 42-234669 of the 60th TCG which crashed in October the 31st, 1944 in the South of France in TOURNON-SUR-RHONE (Ardèche). - In a French book about air history, I have read the following things about this crash : - Member of his plane killed in the crash : - Lt VAYNE, Pilot - Sgt TORTIN-SLEY, - Sgt DUNN, - Unknown - Member of his plane hurt in the crash : - Captain MARGUIS, co-pilot - Sgt TARAPECK - Sgt MOCCIA - The passengers weren’t hurt. I’d like to know the identity of this unknown member of this plane. I’d like to know too where the four members killed were buried. Thank you for your help. Regards.

This plane appears listed at the bottom of the page below sorted by date. http://www.aviationarchaeology.com/src/AARmonthly/Oct1944O.htm You can order full reports from them. Just in the brief listing given, it appears the serial number is 42-23469, the pilot's name was Wayne W Agee, people were killed in the crash and the plane was pretty much destroyed (level 5). There is no MACR that I could find. You probably already have seen the photo on this site: http://www.baaa-acro.com/Photos%20d'accidents%201944.htm and know that the plane caught fire after a forced landing in thick fog. http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19441031-3 Burial site for Wayne W Agee is here according to the http://www.abmc.gov site: Wayne W. Agee Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army Air Forces Service # O-769369 12th Squadron, 60th Troop Carrier Group Entered the Service from: California Died: 31-Oct-44 Buried at: Plot A Row 8 Grave 2 Rhone American Cemetery Draguignan, France Awards: Air Medal

I did a little more searching and came up with an interesting list of names on the following website: (Search for "Agee, Wayne" when on the page.) http://airforcehistoryindex.org/data/000/877/386.xml The names found are listed consecutively and "seem" to relate to a single incident: MARQUIS, EDMOND A. AGEE, WAYNE W.; FERNBECK, GEORGE C.; MOCCIA, NICHOLAS M.; FRANCIS, JOHN W.; GABRIEL, ANTHONY V.; GERSH, TED H.; GETTLEMAN, MORRIS; EICONE, SEYMOUR; ZAPPARRI, ALBERT J.; FORTINSKY, HAROLD P.; GERTSKI, EDWIN R.; FRANCISCO, CLARENCE JR; FAGLEMAN, WILLIAM; ELSNER, MARION; WILCOX, JACK M.; DUNN, HOWARD; ONE UNIDENTIFIED BODY This "may" be the list of names of people involved in the crash. I think the names you have are garbled. Unfortunately it does seem to list an unidentified body. The names you may want to investigate further are Fortinsky, Harold P and Dunn, Howard.

Thank you very much for your help, RSwank. I begun my research in the american site of Air story since few days and I have discovered all your sites which are very interesting with your help. Concerning the unknown of this plane, I'm very surprised this member of the crew airplane is still unknown in USA. I thought he was identified because they are survivors in the member of the crew airplane after the crash (I don't know the gravity of their injuries). Perhaps, he come from an other unit or he come from a stranger army in detachment and nobody knows him before the fly ? I think I can find perhaps his identity with the list of MIA of the Army Air Force in Europe (France) on the October 31st, 1944 if they aren't numerous. Have you other ideas to find his identity ? I may ask to the USA Army a list of military of the Army Air Force MIA in Europe (France) on the October 31st, 1944 ? If it's a good idea, which site on internet ? Thank you for your future help and advices to a beginner. Regards.

Terminator 07, I agree it is very odd that one person seems to be unidentified. I am not sure what that might mean. Maybe some others on the forum will have some ideas of what to try next. Best Regards

Terminator 07, Looking at the way Harold P. Fortinsky is listed (see above) as just in the "Infantry" without a unit, I did a search on the www.abmc.gov website doing a Unit search and just listing Infantry. Besides Fortinsky, you get this man who also died on 31 OCT 44. I checked and he is also listed as DNB: http://media.nara.gov/media/images/29/14/29-1316a.gif Lawrence F. Donaldson Private, U.S. Army Service # 12032391 US Infantry Entered the Service from: New York Died: 31-Oct-44 Buried at: Plot B Row 28 Grave 60 Epinal American Cemetery Epinal, France Awards: Not proof by any means, but he might be a "possibility" for the Unknown. It would take a MUCH MORE checking to be sure one way or the other. (The other option might be to buy the report from the aviation archeology website.)
