Cpt John A Mackay - 12/02/2009 03:50:41 PM ( #1 )
Hi everybody,

I'm Axel from France and some weeks ago I was looking some picture with my grand mother and we found a picture of captain John A MacKay that was hidden by my grand mother after being shot down. So I decided to undertake some research about this pilot. At the time I didn't know if he was a bomber or a fighter pilot.

After some reasearch it appears that he was a member of the 274 th FG ; 248th FS ; His plane a P38 SN 42-104177  was shot down on june 12, 1944, close to ploermel at "Everiguet" (MACR 6509).
here the link were I found the information :
http://www.absa39-45.asso.fr/Pertes%20Bretagne/Morbihan/pertes_usaaf_morbihan.html

So if you had any information on this guy or some friends of him, did he manage to get back to england, etc... let me know on this forum.

By the way thanks to all the veterans for what they did, we'll always be grateful.

Axel

Hi guys I have some good news!

I had some more informations from my grand mother : Mackay arrived in her farm on july 1944; she can't be more precise on the date and then joined back US forces on august 4th when Josselin, the closest city was liberated.
After he managed to return to his unit on august 8th. (from Gary Koch)

And during the following month he came back once and circle several times over the farm to say a last goodbye.

Concerning the mission, it was about dive bombing over Ploërmel rail road. He was shot during it by a small caliber weapon. His left engine was hit and fire started.
He manage to climb to about 3000 feet and bail out.

Here is what I get about this story. If you know him or some of his mates let me know.
