Could the Rudder on this plane been painted blue
-
05/01/2008 10:16:53 AM
I am building an electric RC model B-17G in memory of my dad. I want to paint it original color and it appears in the attached photo that it could be painted sky blue. Does anyone remember or know? The Flatbush Floogie will fly again. If anyone wants to see the build log of my plane see the link below. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=843378 I hope someone can help. Thanks, Jim [image]local://14607/F8F8CA191D924709B1F8C87F0EC4FE95.JPG[/image]

Hi Jim, Don't think the rudder was painted blue. Remember, the rudder and the elevators were fabric covered and would reflect light differently than the rest of the tail assembly. Thus a different appearance even if painted the same color as the fin. Have seen rudders in different shades of gray or OD in an attempt to match the rest of the tail but doubt that an exact match was high on the priority list. Hal

Jim, It appears to me that the plane is unpainted aluminum, thus the control surface fabrics would be aluminum "silver" paint.

Hi Jim I have just come across your message with the attached photograph of B-17G -40- BO serial number 42-97083 'Flatbush Floogie'. Do you know if this aircraft suffered any damage to the tail section during her short time with the 452nd BG? The reason i ask is that i have spent nearly fourteen years researching B-17G 42-97082 'Mission Mistress' which flew with the 94th BG and this aircraft had the earlier tail gun position. Looking at your photograph 'Flatbush Floogie' looks like it has the later Cheyenne tail gun position. Just wondered if 'Flatbush Floogie' arrived with this or was it changed once in England for whatever reason? Regards Chris.

Chris, I do not believe it ever suffered any damage before being shot down. I am sure my dad would have mentioned that. I believe this aircraft came from the factory with the Cheyenne tail. I think I have seen the factory data on this aircraft and it was a Boeing with the Cheyenne tail. Take care, Jim

Hi Jim Thanks for that. I checked the 'Record Card' for 42-97082 and she also came through the Cheyenne modification centre before flying to England. I know that the Cheyenne tail was not standard on the Boeing Block 40 aircraft. Perhaps it could have been a 452nd BG request to have these tails fitted on their B-17's? I'm sure there will be people on here with far more knowledge of the 452nd BG than me. Maybe an answer will come to light? Regards Chris.

That is amazing that aircraft only lasted 3 days. Thanks for the input. Jim

Hi Jim Sadly this wasn't uncommon with aircraft or crews lasting such a short time. Regards Chris.

My dad and his first crew with the 301st Avenger survived 52 missions. This was only my dad's 4 mission after returning for his 2nd tour of duty. Somewhere along the line he flew at least 1 mission with the why worry crew. I believe they were shot down approx. 1 month later. Jim

All, I think the visual effect is more pronounced in B&W photographs - more so than in color photographs anyway - but due to different textures of cloth and metal painted with the same paint color, sun angle etc. in a photograph the two surfaces tend to appear to be different colors. The effect is not limited to 'silver' painted fabric and NMF metal but also to OD (see attached photograph). Add to that subassemblies (vertical stabilizer and rudder) coming together at final assembly from different manufacturers, using different lots of the same 'standard' color paint, and you will have what appears to be two different colors in a B&W photograph. Jim, Thumbing through the latest issue of the 8th AF News I came across a letter to the editor from a George Carmack. Said he was a pilot with the 452nd and flew Flatbush Floogie. Made me wonder how your project was coming along. Since there were no recent posts to this thread I followed your link to the rcgroups forum. Saddened to read of your recent loss. Some days it's all you can do to just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Hang in there. Regards, Hal
