Correct Chronology of the 11 BG H not 7/16/42
-
07/16/2008 07:52:10 PM
Greetings, Todays AAF Combat Chronology states that the 11 BG H left for the Pacific on this date in 1943. Hal Hall, Major Halls' brother has put together the most detailed and correct logs of the 11 BG H during this time. Including the last flight of his brother and the last of the 42 Squadrons B-17s on February 1, 1943. Hal has the logs of the 42 and they left on 7/18/1942 from Kahuku, Hawaii. The crews actually left from Kahuku, Hawaii, (called Xahuku in the log book), on 18 July 1942. From the 42nd BS log book: 18 July 1942 The following ships took off from Xahuku, Oahu at 0800, and landed at Christmas Island at 1700. 1st Flite: Ship #221, Capt. Manierre [in pencil: 42 Bomb Sq] Ship #071 Capt. Richards Ship # 420, Capt. Norton 2nd Flite: Ship #218, Capt. Messerschmitt Ship #443, Capt. Puerta Ship # 151, Capt. Wuertelo 3rd Flite: Ship #155, Capt. Stone Ship #213 Capt. Hall Ship #442, Capt. Eberenz A nine hour flight, it appears.

This is from Hal Halls letter. It pretty much says the samething. He copied it from his brothers' log book. Apparently that is how his brother worded it. His brother became Major Earl Hall Commander of the 42 Sq., whose plane was lost along with three other B-17s on 2/1/1943. The crews actually left from Kahuku, Hawaii, (called Xahuku in the log book), on 18 July 1942. From the 42nd BS log book: 18 July 1942 The following ships took off from Xahuku, Oahu at 0800, and landed at Christmas Island at 1700.
