Col Homer L Sanders/ Burma - 11/08/2004 10:22:25 PM
Hello, I am interested in information on the 51st Fighter pursuit squadron in Burma. My grandfather was Maj Gen Homer Leroy Sanders, who was the first CO. I am interested in general information about the Squadron in Burma, as well as specific information relating to my grandfather, (then) Col H L Sanders. I know this is a rather general request, but I really don't know much about that period of the war, and just have a few letters and articles on Tex Sanders, so would like to get a better feeling for this period in his life. I also realize that it is unlikely that there are many people left who knoew or served under my grandfather, but I am hoping that I might get in touch with someone. Thanks for your help!

Amanda,

I assume you mean the 51st Fighter GROUP, not Squadron as your grandfather was the CO of the 51st FG. The 51st FS was, I believe, in Panama, not the CBI.

Go to the Units db link at the top of the page and enter "51" into the Groups search box. Here's some additional links on the 51st for you (basically the same info as is listed on this web site):

AF Historical Research Agency (51st Fighter Wing):

Combat Units of WWII; AFHRA, Maurer Maurer, editor:

Cheers!

Yes, thank you , I meant Group! He was also commander of the 9th Air Force as Brig Gen, so any info on that period would be appreciated as well.

Try this site. Lots of good info if you poke around a little.
