Good Afternoon All I wonder if any kind soul can point me in the right direction please? Did Chaplain James Good Brown have an Army Service Number at all? And if so does G6713 ring a bell? I have tried the Personnel Files/Lists but none seem to mention this information? Can anybody help out? Many Thanks - Keith.

The 381 BG web site shows Chaplain Brown's service number as O-508643 George

Many Thanks George - But I have a confession? I have recently come into the possession of James Good Browns Flight case? - The only Markings on the Canvas Bag is "Bombardiers Case Type E-1" & has G6713 stamped by Stencils in two places on the front. I was hoping that these Numbers would relate to his Service Number or something similar? Of course he could have been given the Bag from a Flight Crew Member or just obtained the item? Does anyone know the significance of the Stencil Markings "G6713" or is it just a stores Issue number? Just trying to see if it has any traceable History. I have attached a Picture of the Case. Best Regards - Keith.

Keith, It was a common practice to identify personal bags, such as laundry bags, etc, with the initial of the owner's last name followed by the last 4 digits of his serial number. This numbering practice, if followed in this insatance, would not appear to be associated with Chaplain Brown. How did you determine it was his property? We do know he flew several combat missions as an observer, so perhaps that would explain to a degree why he had it, but how is that known?

Hello Bob, Many thanks for the Information - Much appriciated! I obtained the case from a Herb Barup - This is what he said: Hi Keith case was purchased at Mr Browns estate auction in Haverhill New Hampshire may 9th by smiths auctions plainfield new hampshire he lived to be 107 case was in a trunk full of his stuff. There is no written evidence as such but as yet I have no reason to doubt the chap? Going by your Last name Initial & last 4 Digits of a Serial Number I will have a look & see if anything comes up in the Personnel Files of the 381st BG? Perhaps it was maybe given to Chaplain Brown from a Mission completed Aircrewman? - Bomb aimer perhaps? The Quest continues! Best Regards - Keith.

Bingo! - Going by your Information Bob it seems that we have have found a match - The G6713 is in fact a C6713 & the Records state that it belonged to a Herbert Clyne F 0-776713 534th BS Bombardier MOS 1035 of the Boyce W. Crew. So far it all fits? - Will keep you posted of any more discoveries! - Heaven knows how/why Chaplain Brown came into possession of his Case I am not sure? One other question though? - How do you find out what Aircraft was alloted to individual crews for Missions? - As naturally now I would like to find out the History of the Boyce Crew - Seems like they arrived at Ridgewell in September 1944 & the last Mission I can find recorded for them is 9th February 1945. Best Regards - Keith.

What can I say? - Apart from many many thanks! - This has answered most if not all of my queries As always for me it is the history of anything that i find so fascinating - According to your Mission List for Herb Clyne he did 25 Missions so presumably finished his Tour? (I do not know when the 35 Mission rule came into force?) this could explain how the case came into Chaplain Browns possession? Thankyou Lucky M - You are a Star! - Best Regards - Keith.

Smokie, At the time he was flying it was a 35 mission requirement. I note his 24th mission was on 2-16 and his 25th on 3-17...a month in between which would indicate something out of the ordinary happened. Then no more missions. Perhaps an illness or injury? Check the 381st War Diary for those dates for more information.
