Hello,

I am currently researching Captain Harold Dieter of the 444th Bomb Squadron. He was killed in action during a bombing mission on 09/18/43. I have found a wealth of information regarding him from the 320th's web-site and other sources, however I would like to talk with anyone who knew or flew missions with him. Thanks, NIC>

My father was a turret gunner/radio operator in the 444th/320th BG and knew of CPT Deiter. Deiter was regarded as a good man and a good pilot. He was killed in 1943 on a bomb run when he went back to the bombbay to photograph the bomb drop. He was killed by a very small piece of shrapnel that apparently hit him in the head. He was the engineering officer of the squadron and was highly regarded. There is a short article on him in Tannehill's  "Boomerang"

Thanks for the info!  That is great to know.  I just picked up Tannehill's book and when it arrives, I will check out that article.  Thanks again.  Nic.

Dr. Reisdorf has recently updated the war diaries on the 320th site. Go to 444th transcript for 18 September 1943-gives info on his death.
 
The 320th Website is superb!
