After receiving commission, he flew P-39 at Thomasville, Georgia went overseas to 350th Fighter Group, 345th Fighter Squadron, in North Africa, then to Sardinia, on to Corsica, then to Pisa, Italy. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Presidential Unit Citation with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, European Theatre Operation Ribbon with 4 Battle Stars. He flew 114 ground support missions. He was shot down twice. Anyone know the dates or details? Thanks Rob

Rob, I am pretty sure one of his crashes was in a P-39. If I can't find it in my records I will just give him a call. Keith

Rob, Here they are. 23/Jul/44 : (Med Sea - Pomigliano) two ship flight on counter recon mission, on th edeckk, over Gulf of Gaeta; North of Naples when engine quit. Zoomed up to 900 feet. and bailed out. Banged elbow on exhaust pipes on exit from P-39. Landed in 4 ft. swells, got into dinghy. Ater 45 minutes, "Wimpy" dropped 10 man raft. Two hours later, picked up by ASR. Pilot Okay. 7/Oct/44 : (Italy - Tarquinia) On climb out of weather as #3. Flipped upside down into spin by prop wash of #2 when latter unexpectedly moved from left to right wing during a left turn. Bailed out at 1500 ft. over Valentano, landed near a/c. Bombs not armed, pilot Okay. Keith

Rob, I believe the bio you originally posted from the P-47 Association was posted by Joe's grand-daughter many years ago. I believe these two downed a/c represent the "Shot Down twice" remark. I will confirm for you when I am able, whether he indeed went down due to enemy fire. Keith

Thanks Agan Keith; That is where I found it indeed and agree they hopefully cover his mis adventures. In reading your posts and your help I Thank You for your time and what must be a diffucult task due to your wrists, hand and elbow, hoping you a speedy and full recovery. Rob

Rob, I was just reading through the 345th daily diaries on another topic and came across another Joe Canion incident. " Another plane (P-47) spun in from heavy clouds on 7 October ['44] but the pilot, Joe Canion, baled out safely and later returned to base." More on this one later. Keith
