C-54 42-32939 Accident Memorandum - 10/26/2005 12:33:47 PM ( #1 )
I've obtained from the estate of a WWII vet a copy of a 15-page Memorandum from Hq, Air Transport Command to the Chief of Staff concerning the loss of C-54 42-32939 near Paramaribo, Surinam, on 15 Jan 43.  The Memo provides information about the flight, the crew, scene of the accident, and possible causes including sabotage, enemy action, mechanical difficulties, structural failure, and friendly AA fire.  The Memo's conclusions state that the cause of the accident could not be determined "due in part to the fact that the airplane is submerged in water and mud swamp, and to the lack of eyewitnesses.  Parts of the airplane available for investigation at the scene of the accident give no clue as to the cause."

There were 2 interesting passengers on board this aircraft: Maj.Eric Mowbray Knight, who was the author of a number of best selling books including 'This Above All' and 'Lassie Come Home'. The other was P.E.Foxworth a leading G-Man with the FBI.

I will be most grateful if you would send me the copy of the Memorandon to: dhanson9@supanet.com

 Thanking you in anticipation

I would be interested in a copy. I work at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St Louis where individuals from this crash are buried and have been working on a project to document this crash. Thanks in advance.     rwatkins@htc.net

339FS,

I would be interested in a copy too.  I have sent you a PM.  Thanks ahead of time.

Randy and David,

I just noticed that this thread was started four years ago.

Hopefully 339 will help us with this one.
