C-47 and The Hump

I would like to correspond with anyone who piloted a C-47 over the HUMP during WWII. I have questions about the airfields, cargo, weather, etc. Also what are the best books dealing with the HUMP?

Lynn,
In answer to your question about books, I might suggest the
following book for review: "Flying The Hump... Memories of the Air War" by Otha C. Spencer C 1992 ISBN 0-89096-513-7
it also has a very extensive bibliography.

You might check at your library and/or check on an inter- library loan.

Hope this gives you some insight, Steve

Lynn,

I have a close friend and drinking companion (coffee) who flew Goonies over the Hump and the Berlin Airlift. I know he was at first based in Assam, and then somewhere in China which I can neither spell nor pronounce. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a computer, but if you have some specific questions you want answered, I will be happy to forward them.

Regards

"Swords Forever",

Thanks for responding. Could you ask your friend if he ever flew in or out of air bases at Chabua or Dum Dum. I am also interested in knowing what were the most dangerous weather conditions he had to deal with. Would he consider corresponding via snail mail? If so I can send you a private email to discuss.
Thanks.

Lynn,

I'll ask him about the bases and the wx. I doubt if he would correspond, he has Parkinson's pretty badly; can hardly walk, etc. I'll see.

Hugh,

Ask your friend if he remembers the USO tour of Paulette Goddard to the CBI Theater. I am trying to find info on her tour and how she traveled in the CBI Theater. Thanks.

Lynn,

Oh Yes! He does remember P.G. (What 20yr man wouldn't). I remember him telling me about her tour, he even mentioned the pilot who flew her around. I'll probably see him this week-end; hope his memory is clear. Sometimes he doesn't remember too clearly.

I've made a list of things to ask him.

Hugh,

Ask your friend if the pilot who flew P.G. was LT. Joe Trammell. If not, does he remember a Joe Trammell?
