Bugs Bunny squadron patch, 486th BG
-
11/10/2006 10:35:11 AM
Hello, I was wondering when exactly was the 2nd type of the squadron patch issued, the Bugs Bunny on blue background. Some sources say late war, other sources say post-war. Wasn't there an official date? Thanks a lot for your help! Regards, Michael

The original patch with the brown background was pretty much used throughout the war...I have yet to find a photo, including up to when they flew back to the states in July 1945 of anyone wearing the blue background with bugs bunny patch. That patch seems to have been officially made/adopted when they became a reserve unit in 1947. The late John Sutay, who was the official 57th BW and 486th BS historian had uncovered a box of new patchs that were produced but never handed out because the war ended in 1993, and gave them out to squad mates at the 1993 reunion, where my grandfather got a couple for his sons.

Hmmm, so still a strange patch question as no photo has been found (yet) with the blue background. Thanks a lot for the help guys! Michael

Michael - The example of the Patch in the Maurer Book is illustrated with a lot more detail and quality, little different than one shown. Instead of white blotch in Middle - Clouds to right and left of Bugs narrative from book: Over and through a Light Blue - Gray Disc flecked with white Clouds. Bugs Bunny holding carrot in left paw , hurling a Black , white and grey bomb with right paw. Mike

I have found that a lot of the patches in Mauers book are in fact post war. I have an example of everyone of the 486th BS patch, and none of them are the "Bugs Bunny" motif. However, I have seen several examples of the Bug Bunny patch for the SAC units from 1954 through 1972. I am not claiming to be right on this...I have been looking for the picture or the vet with the "official" Bugs Bunny patch for 20 years now with no luck. All the patches I have, except the first generation patch, where made in North Africa or Italy by local merchants. I also have a leather round, that is hand painted. Here is the 486th Patch as it was in Vietnam (incidently the 486th was the only 340th BG squadron to see COmbat in Vietnam, or any war after WWII) [image]local://upfiles/5560/3721549C5BDB4DD59FFB46A3533DA832.jpg[/image]
