Hello 55th FG fans,

Does anyone have any photos or details of Brooks Liles P-51 CY-Q "Sweet Marie II" 44-14175? I am looking for nose art and paint scheme.

Thanks

Dear Dave, this is one of two Mustangs that were missiong on the escort/freelance strafing mission on March 3, 1945.

Hi,

The other aircraft involved in the rescue was that of 1Lt. Bernard H. Howes who also became a POW.
It is reported that his a/c 44-63745 "Li'l Honey" of the 343rd FS which failed to take off, may have later been used by the Luftwaffe.
Both aircraft caught fire. '745 cartwheeled on take off resulting in Liles receiving a broken nose and Howes being blinded for a few days following a blow to his head.
Both were aces, Liles catching Howes up with more victories in the Korean War.
Both trained together, their service numbers were only 10 apart and had agreed that if one were to go down the other would do all he could to effect a rescue.
