Bombs Away! by Harold V. Larson 70BS

I have just reveived the book, 'Bombs Away' written by Harold V. Larson. It has great data and photos of the early history of the 70th Bomb Squadron. If there is any information from this book I can share with forum members, please let me know (there were only 200 copies of this book printed). Unfortunately, this book did not shed any more light on the service record for Stanley M. Rovinsky, my Uncle. He was with the 70th when his plane did not return from squadron mission #75 on January 14, 1944. So far, my search for data (MACR, IPDF etc.) from the US Government has turned up nothing. So, all I can do is reanalyze the data that I do have. Stanley enlisted on 2/17/1941 and he was awarded the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, indicating that he may have flown in excess of 100 missions. I know that he was with the 13th AF, 42nd Bomb Group, 70th Bomb Squadron on January 14, 1944 when his plane 'failed to return'. What I do not know is how long was Stanley attached to the 70 BS. If he was with the 70th from 1/13/43 (mission #1 from the NARA Microfilm data supplied by Kevin Anderson) through 1/14/44 (mission #75) - that is 75 missions and it appears as if Stanley flew more than 100 missions from his medals. So with what group did Stanley fly an additional 25+ missions? That is why I obtained the book 'Bombs Away'. 'Bombs Away gives detailed accounts of 70 BS crew members prior to 1/13/43 and there is no mention of Stanley Rovinsky or of Ross B. Lemmon the pilot. Stanley obviously flew those 25+ missions (or perhaps more) with another bomb group and was assigned to the 70th sometime prior to 1/14/1944. From Stanley's enlistment date of 2/17/1941 to 1/13/1943 (mission #1 from the NARA Microfiche) leaves me with a one year 11 month unknown void in Stanley's service record (assuming he was with the 70th from 1/13/43 onward). The search continues!

I am not positive, but I believe Air Medals for the 42nd BG, 13 AAF, were awarded after the first 25 missions, and every 20 after that. Regardless, an Air Medal with 4 OLC represents lots of missions! Kevin Anderson

Here is a table listing the approximate # of missions for the members of Stanley's crew. They were a very experienced crew based on these numbers. It is just a guess, but by the spread of the missions flown by this crew, they were all members of other crews and perhaps other squadrons as well... Name Service # Award # Missions Lemmon o-791219 AM 2OLC 65 Wathen o-74229 AM 2OLC 65 Somervell o-672989 AM 3OLC 85 Day 1-6047056 AM 3OLC 85 Thompson 1-8031836 AM 3OLC 85 Rovinsky 2-0301266 AM 4OLC 105

Those mission totals would validate my understanding of 25 missions for the first air medal and 20 thereafter, as each is a multiple of the number of OLCs times 20, plus 25. Were these numbers out of that book? Kevin Anderson

Kevin - I looked up the medals the crew had and did an approximate calculation of the number of missions they flew to get a mission profile for the crew. Obviously, a very experienced crew. The mission numbers show that members of this crew flew with other crews and perhaps with other squadrons. I purchased the book 'Bombs Away' to see if Stanley was perhaps with the 70th from the beginning, since it appears as if he flew in excess of 100 missions and the 70th BS mission list you posted lists missions #1 (1/13/43) through #75 (1/14/44) which was the one Stanley was lost on. The book has detailed crew member lists for service in the 70th prior to 1/13/43 and Stanley and his crew members are not listed - which indicates Stanley flew with some other squadron prior to his service with the 70th. On the bright side, it gives me somewhere else to look since it seems as if I have dried up all available resources for the 70 bs. I even tried contacting the surviving members of the 70th and it seemss as if most of them started their service with the 70th after 1/44 and they did not know Stanley. But where to look? I am going to resubmit my request for Stanley's IDPF flie - I have to wait 6 months before trying again. In the meantime, I am researching the other squadrons for the 42nd BG (69, 75, 76, 77, 100, 390, 406) for potential leads. It also seems as if the 70th did some service with the 38th BG. That is about as far as I can take it with the 13th Air Force. I can check the 5th Air Force, but I'm not sure if there were any active transfers between the 13th and 5th prior to their merge....

Steven I see Stanley's death date as 02/04/1946 on the WWII Memorial site. I know they sometimes waited one year and one day before declaring. They did in our case. Even so it still changes from the Jan. 1944 date. Have you or a member of Stanley's family attended any family update meetings provided by DPMO? I have included the 2008 schedule. You can type in DPMO in your browser and see all the information. WWII folks cannot attend the two meetings in DC 2008 Family Update Schedule Location: Houston, TX -- January 12 Atlanta, GA -- February 9 Portland, OR -- March 15 Hartford, CT -- April 19 Tulsa, OK -- May 17 Washington, DC* -- June 19-21 Chicago, IL -- July 26 Salt Lake City, UT -- August 23 Washington, DC** -- October 16-18 San Diego, CA -- November 15 * - The Southeast Asia Annual Government Briefing held in conjunction with the National League of Families'Annual Meeting ** - The Korean and Cold War Annual Government Briefings
