I'm working on a 4 foot X 6 foot poster for the Air Museum of Kentucky. I'm taking the 15th AAF Organizational Chart, blowing it up and adding color pictures of the most representative plane and person/crew. So, 1. Who is the most famous/recognized person/crew of the 464th? 2. What is the most recognized/famous plane of the 464th? Examples: For my dad's group, the 97th B.G.: 1. Paul Tibbets, Jr. 2. The "All American" For the 332 F.G. (Redtails): 1. Benjamin O. Davis 2. "By Request"

John I think we would be hard pressed to make a decision as to who is best know or recognized. My favorite CO was Andrew Jackson (AJ) Bird. Another best known would be Robert (Bob) Wingfield, who brought "Big Fat Mama" back home after a mid air, with the tail fin of the opposing aircraft stuck in the nose of the aircraft. Probably the bestknown aircraft would be "Stevenovitch II", better known as "Black Nan" downed on a "Milk Run" on 4/10/45 taking all but one of the crew with her. ORIGINAL: Bob Hoskinson Another best known would be Robert (Bob) Wingfield, who brought "Big Fat Mama" back home after a mid air, with the tail fin of the opposing aircraft stuck in the nose of the aircraft. The story of Bob Wingfield and "Big Fat Mama" is an amazing tale. Supposedly the landing at Corsica was filmed.

John, Not quite sure of your inquiry as to why Black Nan, but here is what I think ..... Black was the squadron color for the 779th Bomb Group .... Note that there was a Black N on the side of the aircraft, the Call letter for the aircraft was "Nan", thus "Black Nan" Regards, Bob Hoskinson 464th BG, 778th BS

Thanks guys, Bob, in answer to your question - I'm still very new and there is a LOT of ground to cover to learn about this war. History was my worst subject and I've only been at it for about a year. I've gone from knowing almost nothing about my father's service to being asked to write a book by the wife of my father's pilot. So, I'm researching the war in general, training and places, my father's group which spanned the 8th, 12th and 15th Air Forces, interviewing and writing all at the same time - and in addition trying to put together eye-catching displays in my local museum. That and running a family too. That's why I wanted to enlist you all's help. So, thanks again - especially on the insight for Black Nan.

I don't mean to dredge up an old thread, but I just found this forum. I am the great nephew of the co-pilot of the Black Nan. I've been piecing together a history if that plane, and my uncle's time in the AAF. Even though I've just begun, I have already learned a lot. I have the MACR, the MR, and of course found the famous photos. I've also been able to track down the final resting places for all but two of the lost crew. If anyone has information on the Black Nan, or Capt. Charles H. Foote, please let me know. Also if anyone is interested in the history of the plane, I will be posting what I know in it's own thread. I am also in contact with the gentleman who was supposed to be the pilot that day, 1st Lt. John McKiernan. -Ryan
