Belly-landing 5. Oct. 44 - 08/11/2008 11:19:58 AM
Dear mates,

on the above date an a/c with one pilot (so probably a single engine fighter) belly-landed at noon (local time, CET) at Winternam, a rural village near Kerken, NW of Krefeld. The a/c sustained damage of the lightest category and was surveyed by the a/f HQ Krefeld. The pilot was unhurt. Obviously this was no RAF a/c.
Was it probably an F6E?

Thanks for any details, Juergen

I forgot:

The pilot may have referred to the near-by Low Countries or even Belgium,
depending on where he made his first enemy encounter on that occasion.

According to the MACR list, there is only one P51 lost on oct.5th 1944 for the 359th FG 368th FS.
It's a/c 44-13669 (MACR 9266) but the pilot's name is Bartlett Clifford and not Lt. Don Chatfield

Phil, It was Lt. Clifford L Bartlett and he was killed in the crash due to mechanical failure.  However the crash site was in Belgium, not Germany.  I have it as Tirlemont, 10 miles NW of Liege.  44-13669 CV-I

Juergan ,
Phil is correct - I read loss list from wrong date.
10/5/44 : 5 P - 51s Lost.
Any of these close?
Aldeburgh , Tilberg , Aartwood , Tirlemomt , Schouwen
Problem is Countries aren't listed , not sure where these
towns are.

Hi Mike

You can rule out Aldeburgh as this town is on the Suffolk coast, in England, and just south of Leiston.

Regards

Chris.

Hello Mike, Chris and others,

Aldeburgh sounds most plausible, however the town´s real name is ALDEKERK (spelling: Aldekirk), a suburb of Kerken community today. Winternam is a hamlet of Kerken today.

Mike: Do you want some assistance to the other four cities?

Thanks as ever, Juergen
