B-24 crash 12/20/1942 - 01/02/2008 02:46:25 AM
I'm researching info on Eric J. DAY , Lt., # 0-727625 who was lost
12/20/1942 when the B-24 piloted by John M. Rafferty crashed into Walnut Mountain at 2,800ft. killing all aboard.
This is an interesting crash since I cannot find a MACR
Anyone have any info on which plane they were in? Only planes lost that day were B-17s!!
This "lost crew" was found in May 1984 and given proper burial in Arlington National Cemetary

Any info you can provide would be most helpful
Tia,
Eddie

P.S.
They were assigned to the 90BG/400BS

I cannot find a MACR number nor any other acknowledgement of this incident. I did however find a tid bit on the Jolly Rogers site last night which is where this info came from.
only a handful of B-17s weree lost on this date. Not one B-24

Here's the page I mentioned. Lists the crew but, not who was where except the pilot.

Eddie,

I assume the info is from the http://www.jollyrogersweb.com/ website.
Walnut Mountain was/is perhaps on New Guinea?
Best bet is to send a message to the contact person to see if additional info is available.
Otherwise http://www.ozatwar.com/ or http://www.pacificwrecks.com/ and make contact with these people...

Regards,

Leendert

Eddie,

Joe Baugher's website gives B-24D "41-23766" of 90th BG/400th BS as being lost on New Guinea on 20 Dec 1942.
This one may very well be the B-24 you're looking for.

Thanks, I have sent off a note to the Jolly Rogers site. I'll look into the other ones later on, Pacific wrecks is an excellent source! I forgot to look there!!

You won't find a MACR on most losses before May '43, when the system was introduced.  There were a small number of retrospective MACRs, generally raised by order of the higher Headquarters for special cases.

The Rafferty loss on 20 Dec 42 was not formally recorded until 18-Jan-43, when a number of 90BG IARCs (Individual Aircraft Record Cards) were updated.  It must be remembered that at this stage the 90BG was located at Iron Range, in the middle of nowhere in Far North Queensland, and that their paper work was probably being done in HQ in Brisbane.

So happens My Friend ran across the family of 2nd LT Willard F Wright who was on the same plane that crashed in to Walnut Mountain. In the early 90,S one of the family members Sold My friend his medal group and photos.Which now I bought from him. This is really cool to see this info of the crash. Its a small world with this internet. Is there any photos of the plane?

The information on that crash was obtained from Wiley Woods book" The Legacy Of The 90th Bombardment Group" . The book is no longer in print .
