B-24 Nose Art / Name Directory

Hello all,

While searching for specific serial number information, I stumbled across the below website. It contains assigned bomber group and squadron information as well as serial numbers assigned to individual planes and also a nice picture selection of various units. At 188 pages, it contains a lot of information and may take a short while to load.

You can also use the "SEARCH" box at the top of the page to find additional information on B-24's and B-17's as well as other related subjects. It is a wonderful digital library and you could spend hours perusing what is available, limited only by your search title and/or variations of.

I wasn't sure whether to post this in the BOOK CORNER (as it is a digital book) or not. If it needs to be moved that would be fine. I just thought it was more appropriate in this section.

Sorry, though useful, the link inviting people to sign up to Facebook to download is spam.

Please post through another download link provider, as you say on the Book Corner.

Thank you!

As this is copyrighted material, I am very surprised that someone would post this.  I know the author is deceased, but that doesn't change the letter of the law.  this post should be removed.

Sorry, but I don't see what harm there is in posting a link to the material. Besides, it's already available to anyone in the world to see. All you need is a computer. Nothing I posted was copied from the book..... it was from a website that has already made the book available. I just don't see any difference between my post and others that show a link to online books, digital libraries, and/or other related data, copyrighted or not.

to: Lucky Partners - - - sorry for reposting what you had already made reference to. I had not seen your previous post, or I had just missed the link.

Charles:

Thank you very much for making this list available. You have done an excellent job. Aircraft records of aircraft in the USAAF during WWII are public records, available under FOIA, and are thus in the public domain. I see no copywrite infringement. Unfortunately there are those who want to keep this information from FREE access. I am in the process of constructing a database that consolidated all the pertinent information on all combat aircraft that served with the 8th Air Force. Mine also includes the name, rank, serial number, crew position and dispostion of all the 8th AF aircraft that were MIA. I too started out with a nickname list, but expanded it over the years. Most of the information is avaialble from public records and on-line but sometimes obtaining the information takes much time and effort. CONGRATULATIONS on your contribution to taking history out of a dark file drawer in a musty wearhouse and bringing it into the light where this generation and future ones can find it and appreciate it.

The topic of copyright has been thrashed about on this forum for years.  Search the forum for 'copyright' and you will come up with numerous threads.  The general question involves public domain material and the general answer is that the public domain material cannot be copyrighted but a compilation of public domain material can be copyrighted.   In this case, the names and serial numbers cannot be copyrighted but the book Wallace Forman created to compile that data can be copyrighted.  So lets see, Mike is correct, Forman's book is covered by copyright, Charles is correct, he only supplied a link, not the copyrighted material itself, and Lee is partly correct, the data in the book is public domain ( but the book itself is not public domain ).

One excellent and extensive treatment is by our old friend Joe Baugher and can be read at this link: http://www.joebaugher.com/copyright.htm

And still ... clear as mud!

OK..... I know the book may be copyrighted material, but when does that copyright expire? Is there a standard time-frame to be considered? Once a copyright has expired, it stays that way and cannot be reinstated.... period. Maybe I need to call the publisher and see if I can get an answer to that question.

Sorry to be getting off topic here as my only original intention was to provide the link to a source of information for anyone that may not have ever seen it before. To me it is a wonderful collection of knowledge to be shared by those interested in the subject..... pure and simple.

Charles,
No sweat, you done good by providing the link.  No copyright concerns in the link.  To answer your question about time limit, this is from the Joe Baugher link I mentioned:
Under current copyright law, for any work created after 1978 the duration of its copyright is the life of the author plus 70 years.
Forman died sometime in the last 10 years or so.  Got a ways to go on this copyright.
