B-24 KISKA KATIE

Anyone with information about the B-24 Kiska Katie in the Aleutians?   A photo of the crew is shown in the book B-24 Liberator Units of the Pacific War by Robert F. Dorr on page 16.  One of the crew appears to be my father, Walter Conerly-gunner. Any info on this aircraft, the 21st BS, 30 BG would be appreciated.  Keith Conerly

There are several books I would suggest to start with:

Brian Garfield, The Thousand Mile War

John Haile Cloe, The Aleutian Warriors:  A History of the 11th Air Force & Fleet Air Wing 4

Both will give you some good background about the war in the Aleutians.

Kieth,

A third book I would recommend for general information on the Aleutian campaign is:  Ralph Wetterhahn, The Last Fligth of Bomber 31:  Harrowing Accounts of American and Japanese Pilots Who Fought in World War II's Arctic Air Campaign.

The author lists Kiska Katie as having been shot down on 15 May 1943 with a caveat that it could have been on 14 May.  However, the B-24 that crashed on the 14th hit the side of a mountain in the clouds and apparently the entire crew was lost.
