Thanks a lot. The very first bloks to be delivered NMF from factory are G35BO,G20VE,G35Dl. I can imagine (and only imagine) that , depending on the group they were attached to,some planes could have been re painted Olive Drab. Your brother flew with 385th BG 551st BS. Different BG, different BS, may be different painting!!! Anyway, thanks again Philippe

I think the general consensus is that the last Boeing-built B-17 to be factory camouflaged was B-17G-35-BO serial number 42-32044. This was about two-thirds through Boeings G-35 production run. The Detail & Scale book on the B-17 has a photo with both the last B-17G-30-DL (serial no. 42-38213) and the first B-17G-35-DL (serial number 42-106984). The 30-DL is camouflaged and the 35-DL is natural metal. I don’t have the serial numbers for when Vega stopped camouflaging the planes they built. Based on the serial number of the plane you are researching, I would also assume it to have been camouflaged. But unless you find an actual photo of the plane or someone who has firsthand knowledge of the plane, you can’t 100-percent rule out it having been left natural metal. My uncle was shot down in B-17 no. 42-32013. In researching this plane, I have spoken with the four remaining crewmembers that I could locate, and they all independently described the plane as being natural metal. There are no known photos of the plane but I am willing to take the word of the four crewmembers that say it was not camouflaged. Marty Upchurch
