B 29 Tail Insignias - 07/22/2003 03:28:41 PM
My father-in-law was on Tinian in WWII.Unfortunately, his failing memory has left him with no recollection of his bombardment group or squadron number.I do know that his group had the circle R on the tail and that the Enola Gay carried this insignia on its atomic mission.Any information would be greatly appreciated. Re: [stoney28739] B 29 Tail Insignias - 07/22/2003 03:58:48 PM
The B-29's that dropped the a-bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were from the 509th Bomb Gp (VH), but they did not have a circle "R". They had an arrow pointed forward, with a circle around it. [signature]

Hi Stoney, According to this site's Aircraft tail markings data base, I would say you are looking at the 6th bomb group! Good luck in your search... feel free to post tid-bits of info as you get them... we may be able to answer some questions with a little more help. Sincerely, Joshua Grandson of SSgt. George E. Re: [Joshua] B 29 Tail Insignias - 07/22/2003 04:23:58 PM
Joshua, Thanks very much for the info.I tried researching this site and did not find the tail markings database.Obviously I still have alot to learn. Thanks again.I should mention that my father in law's name is Maurice Lamm, and as I said earlier,he was stationed on Tinian and was a navigator I think. I do know from earlier conversations that he was on B 29s ,but his decreasing memory leaves me with much to do to fill in the blanks.Stoney [signature]

Hi...I don't mean to upstage Joshua...but, go to the top of this page and click on the block that says Aircraft.....the scroll down to the B-29 and click on B-29 Tail Markings..there will be a color picture of all the B-29 tails....look for the one you are describing. I agree with Joshua..it appears to be the 6th BG. Jim :-) [signature]

MSgt. Peters, Don't worry about upstaging me, I should have mentioned how to get to the tail marking section of this site in my earlier post. Stoney, If you wish to research the 6th BG directly from this site by posting a topic specificaly aimed at the 6th BG, Go to "groups by region" and click on Pacific Groups... scroll down to the 20th Air Force and you will be able to access the forum which covers the Bomb Groups and Squadrons which served on Tinian, Guam etc. The 6th BG is listed in that category! Good luck in your search! Sincerely, Joshua Grandson of SSgt. George E. LaMarche 25th BS, 40th BG CBI [signature]

My mistake, I replied to this post through my email notification, not noticing that this post had already been redirected to the 6th BG section. Bear with me all, I'm still learning! Sincerely, Joshua [signature]

I'm new at this and am having problems finding B-29 tail insignias. I'm looking for T/I for the 484th Squadron, 505th Bomb Gp, 313th Bomb Wing, stationed at Tinian in 1945. Can anyone please offer assistance? Thanks!!

RE: B 29 Tail Insignias - 04/08/2005 06:51:53 PM
The Circle R of the 6th Bomb Group on Tinian was one of the most distinguished insignias since it was borrowed by the 509th for Enola Gay after Jap fighters singled out Circle Arrowhead planes of the 509th because they had found from gun camera or other observation that the 509th planes had only a tail turret. Prior to borrowing our Circle R they tried painting gun turrets on their aircraft to deter attacks. Enola Gay landed with the Circle R as shown in all the photographs but no ground pictures were allowed until the R was removed and the Arrowheads painted on. Enola Gay is displayed at the Smithsonian/Dulles with the R because the 6th donated the paint and stipulated they would do so only on condition the aircraft be painte in the actual mission colors.

The tail insignia for the 505th on Tinian was Circle W. Circle for being Tinian based and W for 505th.

Would this be one of  the ground pictures not allowed?

OK Jim, I give up. All I get from repeated  clicks on "Aircraft" is a short aircraft recognition item with black silhouettes.
What's the secret?

Bill...I am sorry..at the time of my post...the Aircraft block at the top of the page DID show the tail insignias...

Are you looking for a particular tail marking ?

Phil Marchese is correct in that there were different markings at different times.

I have the tail markings for the B-17 and B-29 from posters I obtained from Boeing,..many years ago...if the one you are looking for, is either a B-17 or a B-29, I can help. (These would be the ones at the end of the war).

Jim :-)

Thanks Jim. I am not looking for anything special, just interested in markings and felt that I had missed an interesting part of this website.

Bill...

Here are two URLs for the B-17 and B-24 tal markings.

http://web.archive.org/web/20030715154304/armyairforces.com/tails.asp

http://web.archive.org/web/20030715084230/armyairforces.com/tails-24.asp

Is this what you are looking for ?

I thought I had bookmarked them, but it took a little effort to find them.

RE: Re: [stoney28739] B 29 Tail Insignias - 08/06/2005 12:11:52 AM
Thanks Jim. That is exactly what I was looking for and it should be permanently archived in some place here. That is important information. I scanned through "Research" and didn't see any indication of it and they are not filed under Aircraft. I probably have most of this in books and Journals but it is nice to have it handy in one place.  The 1970s Osprey books from England on the B-17 and B-14 tail markings are excellent, as I am sure you know, but probably not very available to someone just starting research now.
