Attempting To Obtain Information - 12/06/2005 09:29:55 PM
I understand the 443 TCG served in the Burma area during late WWII.

I lack the aircraft tail number, and organization of Lt. Samuel Howell Lovell, O 668 103 a crew member killed while a crew member over Burma March 24, 1945.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks Mike.  Any way of obtaining type of aircraft, and tail number?  Understand the C-46 was common over there during the period.

I understand it is the 443TCG that Lt. Lovell was assigned?

Robert,

If the person you're seeking was with the 443d TCG, the MACR database only shows 1 a/c for that approximate date.  Go to the MACR db link at the top of this page.  Enter 443 for the Group Search and click Submit.  There is one listed for 1 Apr 45, a C-47 serial # 41-38585.

You can request a copy of the MACR listed (13652) by following the instructions on the Research page (see link at the top of this page).

Gary,

Appreciate your interest, and advise.  I checked 443rd earlier for March 24, 1945, and came up with 2 C-47 MACRs, and 4 CG-4 glider MACRs.

Gary,

I noticed after I sent the previous letter, you are a historian.  Perhaps you may be able to define "1327 AAF Base Unit"?

Robert,

Here's what I have on the 1327th Army Air Forces Base Unit (AAFBU):

1327 AAFBU (Foreign Transport Station) Tezpur, India (429 NY)

The newest forum on this site is a FAQ forum.  In that forum, one of the posts covers all the AAFBUs, what they were, where they were, etc.  GREAT information!  On my web site, I also have insignia, photos, and other info on the AAFBUs (where I've been able to find it).

Cheers!

RE: Attempting To Obtain Information - 12/07/2005 03:52:32 PM
Mike & Gary,

After spending a career in the military, and constant communication with veterans, I learned something today that caused me to concentrate in the wrong organization.

The pilot, Lt. Lovell was in control of a B-24 aircraft.  Since when is a B-24 bomber a carrier of cargo?  When it is converted to a C-87.  It is a bomber without the weapons (or guns).

He was assigned to the 7th BG, 436 BS (Formerly 88th).  MACR 13435 tail number 44-49607 reveals only aircraft lost March 24, 1945.

Unfortunately the pilot, and copilot were killed, but two crew members survived by bailing out of the aircraft.

I will let the family member confirm by contacting Maxwell AFB.

Thanks to all for the dry run experience.

Robert

Seems I am on the wrong track again.  Just discovered in the Manila cemetery web site that copilot 1st Lt. William H. Davis Jr. O 528 643 was classified as MIA or body buried at sea 24 March 1945.  It identifies 1327th Army Air Force Base Unit.

This web site does not recognize the organization.

Suggestions?

Robert
