My Mother-in-law's brother was KIA on October 6, 1944. We believe he was with the 385th in Squadron 551, but have nothing to confirm this. We would love any info that anyone could provide. His name was Athrian Millard Vaughn from Detroit, MI.

Allow me to set the record straight. The whole crew of nine was not killed. Bombardier Stewart Love was the sole survivor. I collect old letters. I have the original batch of handwritten letters written by Florence Jens, mother of co-pilot Lt. William Jens, to William's girlfriend, a Lettie-Jane Luckman. In one letter, Mrs. Jens give direct quotes from a letter sent to her from Stewart Love. She quotes Stewart Love as saying the plane shook violently when they took flak; and when he bailed, he saw no other parachutes from the wreck. The war department wrote to Mrs Jens, saying German records indicated they buried her son in the town of Liepe.
