Associated with 365th FS - 07/18/2007 02:28:35 PM
If there is anyone out there who was in, or had family members etc. in the 365th fighter squadron I'd love to hear from you...any information, photos you might have of the squadron, etc.

While searching online I came across two books that I would love to look at but are unfortunately too expensive for me to order (especially not knowing what exactly is in them) and can't find at any bookstore or library in my area.  One is :
The 365th Fighter Squadron in WWII by Kent Miller
The other is:
Volkmerluft: Every Day was Halloween Every Night Happy Hour in the 365th Fighter Squadron by Leo Donald Volkmer.

I was excited when I saw the second book because the name Volkmer is familiar to me, there is a newsletter of sorts with all my grandpa's old records/war info. Anyone else interested in the 365th FS might find these books useful, though I haven't seen them myself (the Volkmer book costs around $200 for some reason)

Leo “Baron” Volkmer is still with us, but is now in a nursing home, and his health is pretty poor. He was active in a several aviation related associations and continued to fly from many years after the war, so his name and stories come up a lot. And he is a real character. I have had the honor with speaking with him and obtaining a copy of his book. He produced each one at Kinkos, assembled them on his dining room table and had them bound, so they are a bit rare.
Kent Miller’s book is a good day by day account of the squadrons missions with the memories of the veterans describing what happened where he had them. Keep an eye out for them on Amazon marketplace, and ebay, I’ve seen a few drop below $50. It’s still a lot, but it’s better than list.

Thanks for your response..I'll have to keep an eye out on those websites to see if I can find a more inexpensive book.
I found Mr. Volkmer's address a few months ago and wrote to him, and received a reply a few weeks later. He seems like a very nice man.

Renee, I did a search this evening on this book because I purchased one from Leo, The Baron, today.  My family and I have been visiting him and some other WWI vets in the VA Nursing Home for the past few months.  He is an incredible man and lites up when he gets a chance to talk about his book.  I got him to sign it also.  What a priviledge it is to be able to sit down and talk to these guys.  I would be more then happy to look for certain things in this book if you want me to.  I could also get one for you for a whole lot less then you have seen them for.  You can email me here and we can exchange email addresses if you would like.  THANKS

THANKS

Thanks so much for contacting me about the book!  Whenever you get a chance if you could see if there is anything about John K Carlson in it, I'd really appreciate it.
It must be fascinating to be able to speak face to face with someone who was there. I wish I was able to do so with my grandfather before he passed away, but I was too young to understand the importance.

Thank you!!

Renee               Kent's book has a description of Carlson's loss (POW) on 25 Dec, and a photo of him with a group of pilots.
He flew 45 missions between Aug. 1944 and Dec.
There are 138 pages of text, and 61 pages of photos. Chapters include pilot roster, scorers, commanders, non-flying personnel and P-47 assigned where known.
                                                 Regards   Nick
