Assigned aircraft - 12/18/2007 08:07:58 PM
Do you have records showing which aircraft were flown by particular pilots.  My Dad was OD at wars end flying out of East Wretham and I  was curious if that type of information was available.

Thanks

Yes, I have that sort of information and could possibly give you a complete mission listing but would need to know your father's name first.

Clarence Brown........Dad got to England early in '45 and by the time he got to flying, air superiority had been pretty much acheived.  He says he flew mostly air cover for the few bombing missions remaining.  Have asked my father about the aircraft he flew but his memory of the time has faded with time.  He never flew again after returning home but did retire as a Major with a Air Force Reserve unit.       Thanks.

East Wretham

359th FG was at East Wretham (Sta #133) , with 368, 369 &  370thFS..
P-15s were there 1944-on..perhaps this was the unit he flew with

Rick       Clarence was in the 369th FS; there were 6 Browns in the 359FG, 3 were lost. He joined in March, the " OD " on the photo means he was on duty on Sept. 1st 1945.
He probably  got there too late to have his own plane but Peter at Little Friends should put you right.
I've got some contacts in the 359th if you want to let me have your e-mail ( send a PM though ).
Thanks   Nick

Clarence R. Brown is listed in the "Mustang & Unicorns" book by Jack Smith as in the 369 FS with date of March 1945 to Sept. 1945.
Nothing on his P-51 in this book or others I have.
There is a couple of good books on the 359 FG.

Dad was in the 369th...a 2nd LT.  I was able to go to East Wretham several years ago.  Was too early to get a pint in the  Dog and Partridge but the owner did let me in to see all the momentoes still on the walls of the pub. Dad still has his yearbook with pictures of the pilots in it.
Thanks.

As Nick said, he was there too late to have had his own plane assigned but most likely would have done post war.  Here are the details that I have to hand:

2/Lt. Clarence R Brown, Aberdeen MS. Service No. O-835107. To 369th FS on  25 March 1945. Radio Call Sign: Tinplate 94. Flew seven operational missions up to War’s end:
11 April 1945 Mission No. 339(a). Field Order No. 1944(a). Dispatched 38 a/c A Group; 20 a/c B Group.- A Group: escort to B-17s attacking target in Kreuzlinger Forest. Flew as Red 2 in 44-11635 IV-B. Mission time 5hrs 49 mins.   16 April 1945 Mission No. 341(a). Field Order No. 1997(a). Dispatched 34 a/c A Group; 20 a/c B Group – A Group: strafing mission to Prague area. Flew as Red 2 in 44-63878 IV-H; Mission time 6 hrs.   17 April 1945 Mission No. 342(a). Field Order No. 2007(a). Dispatched 18 a/c A Group (369 FS); 36 a/c B Group - A Group: strafing mission to Prague area. Flew as Red 2 in 44-14313 IV-E; Mission time 5 hrs 56 mins.   18 April 1945 Mission No. 343. Field Order No. 2009. Flown as A, B and C Groups. Dispatched 18 a/c A Group; 17 a/c B Group & 16 a/c C Group.  Escort to 9th AF B-26 Marauders attacking oil storage facility in wooded area SW of Neuberg.  Flew as Yellow 2 in 44-72425 IV-J; Mission time 6 hrs 04 mins.   19 April 1945 Mission No. 344(a). Field Order No. 2024(a). Dispatched 18 a/c A Group (369 FS); 34 a/c B Group - A Group:  Escort to B-17s attacking marshalling yards at Falkenberg.  Flew as Yellow 2 in 44-15588 IV-R; Mission time 5 hrs 40 mins.   20 April 1945 Mission No. 345(a). Field Order No. 2039(a). Dispatched 42 a/c A Group; 19 a/c B Group - A Group: Escort to B-17s attacking marshalling yards at Seddin .  Flew as Green 2 in 44-11636 IV-A; Mission time 5 hrs 46 mins.   25 April 1945 Mission No. 346(b). Field Order No. 2084(a). Dispatched 17 a/c A Group; 36 a/c B Group - B Group escort to B-17s attacking Skoda armaments works at Pilzen.  Flew as White 2 in 44-63878 IV-H; Mission time 6 hrs 22 mins.

As you can see, even with seven missions, the flight time was considerable!  Hope this is what you were looking for.
Peter

I must say I am impressed to see so much stuff available.  This subject of this thread is my Grandfather (and cxrguy is my uncle).  I would love to find a book or two that accurately portrays what flying the P-51 during these missions was like.

Have a picture of the last mentioned aircraft in the above post that I will download to this site.  A slight accident on the last mission.

This is what happened upon landing after the last mission listed above.  Dad said the engine developed an oil leak that got all over the windshield.  He found the only pothole on the field.
