Aircrews still listed as MIA's
-
08/05/2008 06:36:08 PM
Hi, Aircrews still listed as MIA's. I have posted the following in their relevant forums below but thought that it may also be useful to post here as they are after all MIA's. Seeking Info on the following losses. 4th June 1942 28th Bomber Group 77th Bomber Squadron. Type of aircraft involved its serial number and crewnames please. 21st October 1944 320th Bomber Group 443rd Bomber Squadron. MACR number wanted or copy of it please. Again, type of aircraft involved its serial number and crew names please. 6th February 1945 312th Bomber Group 387th Bomber Squadron. A-20 serial number 43-22170 MACR 12291 A copy of the MACR if possible and Crew names please. 24th April 1945 507th Fighter Group 464th Fighter Squadron. Serial number and type of aircraft please, I believe a P-47. Pilots name and again a copy of the MACR ( number unknown to me ) if possible. And before anyone says, I cannot these days access the Footnote pages. So if you can help that would be great. Many thanks Alex

Hi Rick, Many thanks for your info. Just the sort of thing I was looking for. I was not sure if this was a Training loss or actually a Post WW2 loss which it now looks to have been. 507th activated in May 45, in operations from 1st July 1945 until May 46 I beleive. 464th Sqdn would have had Yellow tail section with a pale Blue diagonal stripe from fin leading edge to lower rudder aft edge. and would also have had the Yellow wing bands edged with black. Again thank you Alex

Hello Mike, Thank you for the info, I would ask you to please check if the B26 was a 73rd BS a/c ? You say that the B17 was also a 73rd BS a/c ? I seek a 77th BS a/c. Eleventh AF During the afternoon 2 B-17's and 5 B-26's attack the carrier force, and 3 more B-26's strike the cruiser Takao. No hits are scored. 1 B-24 and 1 B-25 fail to return. The Chronology has 1 - B24 and 1 - B25 which I think are typo errors as the rest of the text is about B17's and B26's. or was there a B24 and a B25 a/c lost as well ? ABMC has five names for the 73rd ( the five Marauder crew?) but only one name for the 77th. Thank you. Alex

Alex - The B - 17 that was shot down was in the 36th BS. Pilot - Lt. Thomas Mansfield The B - 26 is listed as 73d Sq. These are only 2 Bombers Lost 6/4/42 5 B - 26s from 77th Sq. Dispatched but no Ships located and RTB. B - 26s from 73d Armed with Torpedos. Capt. Thornborough attacked Carrier Ryujo with no results. Returned and Rearmed with Bombs and tried to find ships. It was on return from this Mission that he disappeared. From Mission Reports in Book: The Aleutian Warriors by John Cloe Mike

Hello Mike and Sean, Many thanks for both of your replies. Most helpful in my search exercise. Paul has answered and given crew names for the B-26. the 77BS man was in there. The a/c serial number would be welcome. Thanks to you both for your help. Alex

Hi Alex B-17E, 41-9084 Capt. Mansfield and his Crew. look for MACR 16285 http://www.footnote.com/image/30088547/Thomas|Mansfield|thoma|mansfields|F/ the crew seems to be correct, but the a/c is listed as B-26 without an serial. all the best Hartmut

Hello Hartmut, Thanks for the link, but as I said in earlier post above I cannot these days access the Footnote pages . The crew that I was seeking was that of Capt George W. Thornborough, which I have been told is a B26 serial 40-1408 and was a 73rd BS a/c but had one crewman that ABMC lists as with the 77th BS. Thank you for your help and for the link, perhaps I can look at it at sometime in the comming months , I do hope so. All the very best Alex

Alex, In the Mark's Report ( http://www.geocities.com/tempelhof.geo/marksreport.html ), Captain Jack S. Marks discribes the events of Jun 4 1944. Here's a quote " One B-26 [40-1408] pilot, [George] Thornbrough, had not landed at Umnak. Later information showed he and Lt. [Harry] Taylor spotted the fleet 185 degrees from the west tip of Umnak 165 mile out. Lt. Taylors bombardier and airplane were hit by anti-aircraft and chased by fighters. He did not drop his torpedo since his bombardier was injured. Lt. Taylor dive bombed the deck of the carrier, which appeared immediately below him under 250 foot ceiling, with his torpedo. It did not explode since it had not been armed [With Thornbrough were N. A. Nysteen, J.F. Lee, R.E. Jordan, J.L. Wiseman, H.K. Jaycox & ?? Smart]. " Russ
