Air Force Memorabilia
-
08/04/2008 01:08:27 PM
A friend who was a B17 crewman in the 8th A.F. and was a POW recently passed away. His significant other who is also my friend asked me for help. It seems that his family is not interested in his memorabilia, he had about 70-100 books, some DVD's etc. I now have everything in my posesstion. I am interested in suggestions as to where this irreplaceable WW2 books etc. can be donated, The lot is quite bulky and heavy.

Jules there are no military type museums down your way that woud be interested in that history? One place I know that isnt quite a household name museum in central Florida is the Central Florida World War 2 Museum. They are looking for collections so maybe they can help you here is their site http://www.cfloridaww2museum.org/ Michelle

I haven't been to it yet, but Penn State University has an Air Force archives. Google Penn State special collection library to see what they have. You might also contact the Mighty Eighth Air Museum. That would be an excellent donation to any museum. I hope you find a worthy home for it.

I would look to answer the following: Where could the memorabilia be located where it will serve to continue the 'legacy' left by your friend? For any rare books or artifacts you may want to consdier a museum, especially if the museum will display the items with a brief history. For books about WWII, Army Air force, etc. . .you may want to consider a library where they can be used for research. Good luck. Edit: Spelling

Jules - The AF Museum at Wright- Patterson AFB has an excellent Research Library. Also - 91st BG B - 17 " Memphis Belle " will be displayed there when Restored. The 8th AF Museum in Pooler , Ga. also has an excellent Library. Mike

Jules, Mr. Terry Aitken is the Senior Curator at the National Museum of the US Air Force. I would suggest you contact him with information regarding the memorabilia you have. His email address is terrill.aitken@wpafb.af.mil I'm sure he would be glad to hear from and you and will get back to you. I will be volunteering on Friday (I usually volunteer every Friday) and if there is anything you want me to do, let me know as I can contact him there. Jerry

If you have items, the MAPS Air Museum in Canton, Ohio is always interested. Unfortunately, unlike the big museums we couldn't pay to have it shipped. We are a 503c Not-for-Profit, all volunteer organization. We have a research library and display room(s) with artifacts and exhibits. www.mapsairmuseum.org Check us out. Ken MAPS Air Museum Volunteer

I believe that the books, DVD's belong in the 8th A.F.museum at Pooler but I have no way of gretting threm there. I think that I found home for them at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL..
