A/C 44-6697; Mission # 383; 03/22/1945 - 05/18/2008 10:44:31 AM
My father, T/Sgt Raymond J. Levesque, was Radioman on this flight which went down and he was taken POW along with 5 others.  Last communication heard they were heading toward the Russian lines due to flak damage....and their disabled A/C was shot down by 3 Russian (?) fighters.

I wonder if the 3 Russian fighters were.... German fighters disquised as Russian A/C?

Does anyone know if the A/C was ever recovered?  If so, where in Germany?

Any ideas what POW Camp they might have been brought to....seeing it was so late in the War and most camps were being closed?

Any suggestions?

Charlotte

Hi Charlotte

Attached is your father's POW Record from the NARA website. Sadly no POW Camp is actually listed.

http://aad.archives.gov/aad/record-detail.jsp?dt=466&mtch=1&cat=all&tf=F&sc=11675,11660,11679,11667,11669,11676,11672,11673&q=levesque+raymond+j&bc=sl,fd&rpp=10&pg=1&rid=86992

Do you know the names of the other crewmembers who also became POW's? Their records may list a camp?

Regards

Chris.

Chris:

Thank you......and yes, I have the names of the other crew members.  I just received notice that two ( 2 ) are still alive.  Will be making contact with them shortly, as I have letters to post for them today at the Post Office.

Hopefully one of them will remember.

I posted a response to you yesterday but it is not on the board.  Seem to be having some difficulty, now and then, getting messages to post...including PMs.  I am not quite sure why that is......

Thank you so much for your suggestions....
Regards,
Charlotte

Hi Charlotte

That is good news about two crewmembers stilll being alive. Hopefully they should be able to fill in any details that you are missing.

Also have you got a copy of the Missing Air Crew Report (MACR 13245) covering the loss of your father's crew? The report may have some details, including eyewitness accounts, of the events surrounding March 22nd 1945. If you need any help in getting the report just let me know.

I also had problems with this site yesterday. For a couple of hours i couldn't even gain access. Why i don't know. This doesn't happen very often.

Regards

Chris.

Charlotte:

Your father aircraft was shod down in the area of Waldenburg, Germany (now Walbrzych, Poland).

Yes, it was shot down by Soviet P-39 fighters.

There were several American aircraft shot down by Soviet fighters or Flak at WW2.
