I presume you meant North American Aviation's A-36 Apache, which was flown by the 86th and 27th Fighter Bomber Groups.

The "Invader" name was suggested by Lt John Walsh of the 527th (formerly 312th) in July 1943 and was subsequently picked up by the press. An account is given in the 527th War Diary via:

Apologies!  I had not previously encountered the "Invader" reference applied to the A-36.

Jack and Tony,

Unless I’m missing something you are both correct as the official North American designation was Apache also “unofficially known as the Invader” – same aircraft, a rose by any other name…equipped with dive brakes making it a superb close air support weapons system.

Nice photo of A-36 with dive brakes deployed sitting on the ground.

According to a friend who flies for Collings the pilots manual says Mustang.  The pilots who've I've talked to
that flew it called it the Invader.

I have attached a page from the 527th Squadron War Diary in support of my previous post that Lt Kirsch was assigned to that squadron.
