A request for help

I recieved this messages today from a lady who asked me to help. It is out of my area of knowledge.

Can you please help me find imfo on the Ipswicth Base in England? My father, SGT Howard Williams, was there but would NEVER talk openly about it. His records for the most part were destroyed in the St. Louis fire. ANY help would be much appreciated.
Faye

    Cody,
Not my area either but the Guide to AAF Bases in the UK by Capt Barry Anderson lists only one outfit based at Ipswich:
"Det F, 1192 MP Co Avn, 3 Bomb Div, 8 AF"
    Hope it helps.

It could be RAF Bentwaters/RAF Woodbridge, as I was stationed there in the mid 70's. Not sure

Cody here are four links I found just doing a quick search.  Some have some interesting stories.

I did a google search using: the Ipswitch Base, UK during WWII

the 356FG was stationed at Martlesham Heath just outside Ipswich , they have a memorial society ( Martlesham Heath Aviation Society) and the tower has been restored. There were several Williams there ( common name) but couldn't find a Howard on the roster.
Faye may like to contact Bob Dunnett at

I have responded to her (Requested) that we need more data in order to help her. I gave her a list of questions in hopes of sparking a memory & told her to look in her Father's home of records for possible info because some Vets had copies of their military documents stored there. I thank you all for your efforts on her & my behalf.

Here is some more info from Faye:
My Dad was in from Aug.1942 till Jan 1946. Separation Center was Fort George Meade, Maryland. There are several pins I haven't been able to ID, one looks like a fist with lightning bolts . I'll see if I can post those, I also have a distinguished unit badge.

The pin you describe, a fist clutching bolts, has been used by many groups and organizations, literally throughout history. Everyone from the ancient Norse, to the modern day International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

As a military insignia, it has been used by the infantry to denote a forward observer, air forces applications include, though most likely not limited to, WWI RAF wireless operator: http://www.monsmilitaryan...e/1149.jpg   and later SAC's: http://www.wtv-zone.com/k...tos-5/SAC-Emblem-2.jpg

The respective use dates of the  two examples above would seem to eliminate them. Without a photo of said pin its really no more than guesswork, but I think what you might have is a pin version of this patch: http://www.b24bestweb.com...827-bs-patch.JPG  Which is from the 484th BG, 827th BS

    Hope this helps
