A Little Bit Of History - 8-6-45

Gd'morning;
There's not too many still alive that remember Aug. 6, 1945.  The day we dropped the A-Bomb, that ended the greatest armed conflict in the history of mankind - that lasted just 2 weeks short of 6 years, and claimed the lives of millions of people, both military and civilian.  .

    Jack,

    Thanks for your memory to the overall effects of WW II and the losses the world suffered as a result and thank you for your service to our country during this conflict. Let these pieces of history never be forgotten by any American of the services of those that serviced and sacrificed in Theaters around the world and on the Home Front. What follows represents only the last moments of the struggle that took such a large toll from our world.

    Today is a day for a moment of pause in remembrance of the events on 6 August 1945. The culmination of nearly four years of development came to an end at 8:15 AM over Hiroshima bring the world into the nuclear age; for details of this development see: http://forum.armyairforces.com/509th-CG-Tinian-f135.aspx Today is also a day of remembrance for the residents of Hiroshima who had fallen victim to a militaristic Japanese Government who stubbornly refused to surrender in the face of sure defeat.

    The XX Air Force had already wiped nearly every major Japanese city from the map, yet this event and that which would follow three days later were needed as exclamation points to show there was no hope for a negotiated peace with unconditional surrender the only option left.

    Between 6 August 1945 and 9 August 1945, President Truman offered one last warning to the Japanese Government which also fell on deaf ears.

    "If they do not now accept our terms, they may expect a rain of ruin from the air the likes of which has never been seen on this earth."
    -Harry S. Truman, August 7 1945
    Respectfully,
    Scott

    Yes, Jack, I remember it well.  I was at the Santa Ana AAF Returnee Center after my combat tour with the 8th AF.  We were awaiting reassignment to further combat duty in the Pacific when we read the story of the A Bomb being dropped and its enormous power.  We "knew" in that instant there would be no more war for us.  A feeling of relief that I can't adequately explain took us over.

    Jack..
        Your ranks are getting thinner by each passing day, but I do believe that the ones you pass the torch to will never let those sacrifices be forgotten.
