97th Squadron Patches

Does anyone have a picture of the 340th, 341st, 414th Squadron patches?

I have a picture of 342nd - monkey on the cloud pitching a round bomb - from my father's co-pilot's jacket.

    Thank you very much!
Can you give me a year on their inception and who made them/their history if you know?

I'm told the 342nd patch was made by a friend of one of the guys. The story is that the friend worked at Disney. True? I don't know but a lot of patches did come from Disney.

I'll have to do a little digging on the jacket pic but I SHOULD have it posted somtime tomorrow.

Your quite welcome John, glad I could help.

As to the origins of these insignia I can only say that I have
been waiting for more than two years to hear back from Disney
regarding my inquiry as to the design of the 340th & 341st BS
insignia. If these were not generated by the Disney Studios the
designer either was a former employee or just studied the style
utilized by the Disney artists. All I can tell you for certain is that
the 340thBS officially adopted an squadron insignia in May 1956
and the 341stBS followed suit in August of 1957.

The 414thBS insignia was officially adopted in June 1944 and
represents a noteworthy event connected with one of this squadrons
    combat missions.

One of the Forum members may be able to add more information
regarding the history of these images.

    Bob

    P.S. I had the 341stBS mis-labeled so
I re-posted the corrected image. RW

    Gary,

I'll give DisneyDave a shot. Like John, I'd
like to have a little background information on
    these two designs.

    Many thanks,

I got this from Don Kofron, my father's co-pilot and owner of the jacket:

"The 342nd Squadron insignia was offered by a squadron pilot whose father worked for Disney."
As with all of the period patches (I believe), he had the leather insignia painted by a local artist near his base in Foggia, along with the leather wings.

    Bob,

My dad's crew got to Amendola Base 9 October 1944. I'm not positve but I think Amendola was occupied by the 97th Bomb Group late in 1943. Pilots seemed to have gotten in and out pretty quickly, an average of 6 to 9 months at that point. My WAG is that this patch design was produced mid to late 1944.

As to the pilot who got the design from his dad - I haven't a clue and I doubt Don remembers but I will ask him.

For what it's worth I found a picture of the Donkey Kicking the Round Bomb on a webpage next to a crew in the 8th Air Force. I believe the crew was 342nd BS as well.

I'd like to know your sources and time periods for those other three patches as well. Rob and I are putting together a poster for the Air Museum here in Kentucky.

To anyone with any other of the 97th's squadron patch designs:

I would greatly appreciate an image and as much information on the origin and era as possible. I will send a copy of the mini poster to anyone who is willing to contribute when Rob gets it done.

That goes for you garyg and skybear Bob, if you are interested.

In that vein, murph sent me a rabbit patch of his grandfather's but we don't know for sure which squadron. The Rabbit is riding a bomb with tail fins. Underneath it says, "Let's cook 'em Doc"

    Thanks again!

Attached is the original Disney design for the 342dBS. This image
was replaced by the 'baseball monkey' shortly after the 97thBG
deployed to the U.K. There is a purported third design for this same
squadron which consists of a black pyramid with a human skull
superimposed over the center and flanked by two yellow aerial
bombs. This design will be included in Battle Colors Vol.IV but with
a qualifying statement unless I can come up with hard proof of its
    use during the war.

The story behind the 414thBS design is, in brief, as follows:
92dBG engaged in a raid on the docks at Tunis and on the return leg
the group was jumped by German fighters. A B-17 of the 414thBS, the
'All American' piloted by Lt. Kendrick R. Bragg was hit by a spiraling
enemy fighter, tearing off most of the left horizontal stabilizer and
severing 2/3 of the rear fuselage. The ship returned to base and landed
safely with no injuries to the crew. The tail section collapsed some time
later while being inspected by the ground crew.

In case you need it I'm attaching the 97thBG insignia under a second cover.

The rabbit riding a bomb insignia you mentioned rings a bell. If you will
post an image I'll see if I can't I.D it for you.

    Post script to the 414thBS insignia story;
The raid on Tunis occurred on 1-Feb-43.

    Thanks again!

Here is an original 342nd BS patch from my collection.  This Disney design is hand-painted on aircraft fabric. Also is a second patch, incised in leather, probably from Capri, showing both the 342nd BS and 97th BG insignia.

My uncle, Erwin C. Breithaupt, Jr., flew 51 missions with the 342nd as a waist gunner.  You can read more in this interview with him from 2003:

    Rick,

That's some real fancy scroll work on the 97BG patch.
Any chance that you could post a closeup image of this piece?

Very interesting patch Rick, a lot more complex than
what we normally see in connection with this design.

    Thanks for the posting.
