97th BG squadron logo's
-
05/03/2008 11:33:01 PM
I saw a few entries ago that you guys posted known squadron logos for the 97th. I know my grandpa was part of the 97th and this is a photo of his jacket with a logo that doesn't match the ones posted. Can anyone help me narrow down which of the four squadron is his? I know the serial # of their aircraft and when it went down so I know that he definately was part of the 97th. I know that sometimes there were unofficial logos and they weren't documented so it is hard to locate information on them.

Murf, The insignia on your granddads jacket bears a strong resemblance to that of the 779thBS/469thBG. This was a stateside B-17 training unit assigned to the Second AAF. You might check to see if your grandfather may have been an instructor with the 469thBG at one time during the war. Bob

Murf, As a P.S., I've attached a crew photo showing the 799thBS jacket patch. Bob [image]local://13750/3FA638E68E7A43EA814B8AE7037562C3.jpg[/image]

I posted that crew photo. I already have that. Was the 799th before the war? I know he spent some time in Florida before he hopped over to Tunisia but i know his active duty was with the 97thBG. Is that where they did the instruction. I also have a photo album of his that says Gunnery school (Las Vegas). Could that be where he got the jacket?

The 469thBG was stationed at Pueblo AAB, CO 1-May 43 and Alexandria, LA 7-May-43. Unit deactivated 1-Apr-44.

Skybear and Murf, I saw another similar patch a few days ago, while browsing the web. This particular version, however, looked just like bugs bunny atop the bomb and did not have the slogan. The person attributed it to the 97th Bomb Group. I just wonder if this was a patch developed at the training base in Florida and taken over to England in those first months? The 97th was carved out of another Group sent to the Florida base and then expanded according to executive orders.

Murf, What was the serial number of the ship he went down on? Surely we can pin down an approximate time by the ships number and discern whether he was in England, North Africa or Italy. Perhaps we can narrow it down from there.
