91st Crew Photo, help putting names to faces?
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help put names to any of the men in this picture? I believe the man at front centre maybe Lt.John Gelles but I have no details on the rest. Thanks, Matt.

No Idea on the name or serial of the plane I'm afraid,but the squadron is probably the 401st. Lt.Gelles joined the 401st on 25th June 43 and flew 7 missions as a Co-pilot with the squadron,these were as follows... 28th July 43. Kassel,Germany. 15th August 43.Vlissekgen,Holland. 17th August 43.Schweinfurt. 3rd September 43.Romilly-Sur-seine,France. 6th September 43.Stuttgart,Germany. 15th September 43.Romilly,France. 16th November 43.Knaben,Germany.

Try going here if you haven't already, and look up the 91st Dailies under 401st Squadron. http://91stbombgroup.com/. My father was a co-pilot in the 401st from Dec. 1943 until May 1944. Most crewmembers only hung out with their own crews, according to my Dad. They didn't want to get close to other crews because they didn't want to have to deal with the possible loss of life. I thought the 91st Bomb Group was part of the 1st Combat Wing?

Just read from the dailies that on the 16th November mission to Knaben that Lt. Gelles was listed last. That meant he was in the tailgun postion of the plane. The squadron commander was co-pilot on that plane probably in the lead position. The commander always wanted a pilot/co-pilot in the tail to keep tabs on the formation. My dad had to do that once.

Hi. I'm curious as to what other stuff Gelles had brought home. Any information would be great. Seems like he had a lot. Jack

Did he have a leather jacket? I have a canvas flight hat of his and three pair of his goggles, the most complete photo album I've ever seen, 200 or so letters he wrote home to his Mom, his leather patch and a few other things. I'm just curious what else there was. Being a history buff and not a dealer, I try and find out whatever I can. You can email me directly if you like multicynic@aol.com Funny, but people rarely ask questions when buying "stuff." I got a Boeing Test Pilot's leather hat and leather flight bag and it had the pilot's name and all his info on it. Even the bag had writing all over. The seller never bothered to look him up. Turns out he was the owner of Boeing's personal pilot and was their Chief test Pilot from WW2 on. died at the age of 101. Nobody would recognize his name probably but how cool is that? He flew planes well into his 90's. He'd fly home after a party and they'd send a plane to follow him to make sure he got home alright. What a great story. Best, Jack

As noted by Mike, Lt Gelles is listed as having transferred from the 91st BG, 401st BS to 1st Combat wing Station #107. This as per 401st dailies. Station #107 is Molesworth, home of the 303rd BG. You may be able to pick up the trail on the 303rd's website at: http://www.303rdbg.com/index.html. While not as easy to navigate as the 91st BG website, it nonetheless offers a lot of info. Good luck Frank

So far no luck with the A/C or crew shown in the photo. I can add some info to the missions that you've listed. 28th July 43. Kassel,Germany. A/C 42-3162 LL ? "Buccaneer" This was the original Buccaneer, subsequently lost after colliding with another fort over the target area on 12 August 43 15th August 43.Vlissekgen,Holland. A/C42-29816 LL K "Eager Beaver" 17th August 43.Schweinfurt. A/C identified in 401st dailies as A/C 639, however no such tail # exsist in the 401st A/C assignment list. This might be A/C 41-24639 OR W "The Careful Virgin", belonging to the 323rd BS 3rd September 43.Romilly-Sur-seine,France. A/C 42-29591 LL Z "The Shamrock Special" 6th September 43.Stuttgart,Germany. A/C 42-5379 ?? ? "Yankee Eagle" 15th September 43.Romilly,France. A/C 42-29591 LL Z "The Shamrock Special" 16th November 43.Knaben,Germany. A/C 42-5729 LL E "Piccadilly Commando", at some point renamed "Buccaneer". Sorry I didn't think to record the pilots name when I was matching tail #'s to A/C names. Lay was the pilot on a lot of these mission. Then there is the curious two month gap between 15 Sept and 16 Nov, at which time, Lt Gelles is listed last on the load list indicating he was the tailgunner. I know this is not unheard of, but I find it interesting. 2 1/2 months, (and no missions), later he would transfer to the 303rd BG. Every answer revealed opens 10 unanswered questions Frank
