For information: 10th January 1945 A B-17 338305 of the 860th/493rd came down in Great Holland. Not to be confused with the "Dutch" Holland. This Holland is 20 miles east of Colchester, Essex, UK. The aircraft came to rest in a field barely yards from the sea nose up against the Clacton to Frinton road. The plexigalss nose was in tatters and there was blood left from the bomb aimer and at least one engine needed to be replaced. It was decided to repair it on site rather than dismantle it. Over the next few weeks a temporary track was laid by the 861st and the aircraft took of towards Frinton and back to Little Walden (which was being used at the time as repair work to sunken runways was being carried out at it's "home base"). The area in which it came down is very marshy and work must have been hindered by this. The pilot must have been lucky and talented in equal amounts to make land, find a soft marsh and to miss all the trees thereabouts. There is a photo of the event but I have been unable to find it (at the moment) Michael
