742 squadron info - 04/28/2008 01:22:26 PM
Hello!
I am new to this board and hate to say I am starting out asking for help instead of helping first.  My uncle flew with the 742nd from Italy ( I am told ) and was shot down not long after arriving. I have been told that he was taken to Luft Stalag 7A, but the family story is that he was in Stalag XIIId and that he was part of the "death march".  My uncles name is Arthur R Tilley, o-708962 is his serial number, and was a 2lt and bombadier.  He came from Bangor Maine.

Where can I get information on this topic or who could I talk to for help.?

Thanks to all in advance

Hi Richard,

Your uncle and my dad were both shot down on the same mission (different planes, though), and ended up as POWs in Stulag Luft III.  The target that day (26 June 44) was the refinery at Moosbierbaum, Austria, just outside of Vienna.  The Missing Aircrew Report (MACR) number is 6405, and I have a copy if you would like to see it.

2nd Lt Tilley was flying on a B-24J named "Rusty Dusty" http://www.b24bestweb.com/rustydusty.htm

If you have not seen it, Arthur wrote an account of his experiences, including the forced march to Stalag VIIA:  http://www.awardphp.com/Tilley.php

I will send you a PM with additional information.  More to follow!

Dave
