7 July 1944_crash_B-24_Patsy Ann II_44BG

Hi, Recently I have spoken with a man, who saw on July 7th 1944 as a young school boy an aerial battle and how a B-24 went down out of control near Halberstadt with some airmen hung on their parachutes. Out of curiosity, he visited with some family members the crash location shortly after the bomber had fallen down. The attached photo shows him, standing on the planes tail. Crashlocation was between Halberstadt and Quedlinburg. Due to the visibility of a part of the serial number, I could identify this B-24 as the #42-100170, "PATSY ANN II", 44BG, 68 BS. Pilot was James A. Wilson this day (earlier the co-pilot of the Arnold Larson crew). On the 44th BG's website, in the groups Roll of Honour at page 335 the last flight of this crew is described and also the crew-members are listed. I am trying to locate a photo of this crew ( or the Larson crew with the co-pilot James A. Wilson) for my eyewitness and me. Any knowledge about a photo of the plane and the nose art? If anyone can assist me in this research I would appreciate your response. Please see the attached photo. rauhbautz [image]local://upfiles/6924/60A845BD457C45489D3E9BD27D956ECE.jpg[/image]

Roger, thanks a lot for both photos! Concerning the aerial battles on 7 July 1944: In the vicinity between Halberstadt and Quedlinburg crashed two B-24 “Liberator†this day. One was the 44th BG’s “PATSY ANN IIâ€, the other plane was a B-24H from the 389th BG (566th BS), # 42-95029, pilot:Baney,MACR 7366, crashlocation: Quedlinburg. There is a german “Abschussmeldung†(shot down report), in which the Geschwaderkommodore of JG 300, Major Walter Dahl, describes the destruction of a B-24 that day, confirmed by his wingman Feldwebel Loos, as crashed in the vicinity north of Quedlinburg. So one of this two “Libs†could have been the victim of Walter Dahl. Oblt. Kurt Gabler (see the 44 th BG’s Roll Of Honour) had started to intercept the bombers with his flight from Juterbog airfield, he reports: ….“We dived headlong towards Halberstadt where we landed to refuel and rearm at 10:10. It must have been that this close combat had sorely tested my nerves, as I made the most elementary error: I forgot to lower my gears as we came into Juterbog an hour later. My 109 slid along the grass and was slightly damaged.†http://www.luftwaffe.cz/dahl.html http://www.luftwaffe.cz/moritz.html http://www.luftwaffe.cz/iffland.html members.aol.com/kaczmarek190/mullers2.jpg http://members.aol.com/falkeeins/Sturmgruppen/blitzluftschlacht.html Except the radio operator Dominic Yocco, all other crewmembers on board the “PATSY ANN II†have survived the shot down of their aircraft. Dominic Yocco was found droned (probably getting cought up in his parachute) in the “Breite Lochâ€, a little lake westward nearKloster-Groningen by an inhabitant of this small village, August Sinner. He was buried in the community cemetery Kloster-Groningen (later reinterred in the Ardennes, plot Y-10-231). Roger, I send you to your personal e-mail two pictures concerning some of the locations I’ve mentioned above. I’d appreciate all additional infos. Regards, rauhbautz
