5th Wing(2BG-Heavy) and the Holocaust question
-
02/21/2008 06:33:59 PM
Dear Forum members of the 2nd BG, I have been involved in and have almost completed research on the Opertion Frantic 1 mission to Debrecen, Hungary on June 2, 1944. My work has mainly been through contacts from the 97th BG who also participated on the Debrecen mission, principally because one of their aircraft had been shot down during the action over the city. During the gathering of the data the focus on this mission broadened and came to include other questions, one of which is in regard to the Holocaust. With this broadening of the question I decided to include the same questions about the Debrecen mission to the other 5th Wing BGs that participated: the 99th BG, the 2nd BG and the 483 BG. The question regards what was going on below the bomber streams. within the city. At the time of the mission there was a general arrest, capture, and collection of Hungarian Jews in and around Debrecen (12,000 of them) for transport to Auschwitz death camp in Poland. The Jews had been assembled for transport from Debrecen train station, the target of the 5th Wing formations; which included aircraft of the 2nd BG There is a more comprehensive explanation of this background and its relation to my research in the 97th BG forum. This explanation includes several questions regarding aircrew knowledge of what was going on below them, and any information about a link between USAAF operations at that time in 1944 from a crew's point of view. I invite you to read that forum post and respond to those questions I am an AAF forum member and can be contacted in the usual forum manner. Let me thank you in advance for any replies. Zamasr. I have been informed that a link to the background information and to the related thread is //forum.armyairforces.com/m_143153/tm.htm
