51st. Fighter Squadron, Panama

My dad, Ben Kropidlowski, was in Panama 1944-46.
I thought he was with the 51st. Fighter Squadron but the info I have found says the 51st. disbanded in 1943.
I'd appreciate any help.

According to the unit database on this site you are correct. The 32nd Fighter Group, of which the 51st Fighter Squadron was a part, disbanded on November 1, 1943 in the Canal Zone.

What documentation have you been able to find on your father? Look through any documents, letters, and photographs. There should be something that can help to identify the unit he was in. Another thing that can be helpful is if you have any unit insignia from his uniform. If you have difficulty identifying something, post a photo here, there are plenty of people that can help you.

    Good luck.

Copy and paste the above web address and get the sqdn insignia and history. This is about the neatest patch of all that I've seen.

You are right Phil. According to Combat Squadrons of WWII, the 51st Fighter Squadron was active from 1 Jan 1941 to 15 Oct 1946. It's Group Hq (32nd) was inactivated on 1 Nov 1943 and it was assigned directly to XXVI Fighter Command. This was true of all Fighter Squadrons (28th,30th, 32nd, 43rd, 51st) in the Sixth Air Force at that time. All Bombardment Squadrons (3rd, 29th, 74th, 397th) in the Sixth Air Force were assigned directly to VI Bomber Command on 1 Nov 1943.

    Craig,

If your still seeking information with regard to the 51st Fighter Squadron "Fighting Billygoat" 6th Air Force Canal Zone.  I can help you.
My grandfather was a crew chief in the 51st and it did not disband in any way in 1943.  I have documentation proving that.  He was assigned to the squadron in 1943 and did not leave Howard Field with the 51st until 1946.  Please contact me...interesting, my last name is Karr as well.
