507th - 12/10/2004 10:50:17 AM
I just found this site by accident and would like to learn more about the 507th. My Dad, Byron H. Foreman was the commander when the unit was at Ie Shima in 1945. I've got pictures and some documents and would like for them to be of value to somebody beyond just me. Dad is 86 this month and has Alzhimers but still remembers a lot and can still tell me a few stories and knows names to some of the old pictures too.

My office e-mail is: paul.d.foreman@state.mn.us and my home e-mail is: pdf0@comcast.net.

I would really like to hear more about the 507th and would contrubute what I could on my part and from Dad too.

Thanks!

I would suggest that you get as much information from your father as possible right now, and record it for future use. You never know when somebody might need to know something, and it might be too late by the time the question is asked. I had a great uncle with Alzheimer's, so I know how it can ravage the mind.

I don't know if the 507th FG has a unit association, but if they do that would probably be the best way to share your father's information. The 20th Air Force Association would also be a good place. Here is a link to their website:

I know that this reply is two years later, but I have been researching a second cousin who served with the 57th Air Service Group.  In piecing clues I have found and matching that to stories known of his death from the family, I am on a path that leads me to believe there is a link between him and the 463rd FS/507th FW.

The cousin is Sgt. Thomas J. O'Dea in the HQ and Base Services Sq.  The story is he was killed helping a fighter pilot at Okinawa when the plane crashed.  He died on 30-Jul-45.  I believe he was at Ie Shima and, if the stories are correct, I have found information that a P-47N piloted by Vincent R. Payne crashed that day on Ie Shima.  Payne was listed as being in the 463rd FS/507th FW.

If you have any information about Payne or 57th ASG through documents, pictures or stories I would greatly appreciate it.

I will send you a message from home too....  sorry I have not had time to keep up but will once again try to get something out of the box in storage and see what I can find from Dad's stuff.  Dad (Byron H. Foreman) is 88 now and has faded a bit - can't really remember much and can't recognize the photos anymore either.  Thanks for the help/interest & I hope to get more involved.
