507th FG or 463rd FG
-
03/13/2003 07:03:14 PM
To the best of my knowledge the 507th was found in the 20th AF until it was transferred to the 8th AF in Aug 1645. While I'm happy to have a forum here in the 7th AF I'd like to be assured that this is the proper location.
Since not many died from the 463rd FG in the Pacific I hope you'll come out shooting to set me straight.

I have also been led to understand that the 507th FG was stationed in England and transferred to the Pacific once the European theater appeared defeated. They were brought in as trainers for new FGs. Correct me if I'm wrong.

This is from the Maurer-Maurer book on Combat Units of THe Air Force in Ww II :
Constituted as 507th Fighter Group on 5 Oct 44 and activted on 12 Oct. Moved to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Apr-Jun 1945. Assigned to 20th AF; reassigned to 8th AF in Aug 45.
No where does it say it was assigned to the European Theater in the 8th AF.
Stations : Peterson Field Colo 12 Oct 44; Bruning AAFld Neb,20 Oct 44: Dalhart AAFld Tex 15 Dec 44=24 Apr 45; Ie Shima 24 JUn 45; Yontan, Okinawa,29 Jan-27 May 45. KinrossAFB,MI 18 Aug 45.
463rd Fighter Squadron
Constituted 463rd Fighter Squadron on 5 Oct 44. activated on 12 OCt 44; Assignment 507th ighter Group 12 Oct 44-27 May 46.
Stations; Peterson Filed,Colo 12 Oct 44; Bruning AAFLd Neb,20Oct 44; Dalhart AAFld ,Tex, 15 Dec 44-20 Apr 45; Ie Shima,24 Jun 45; Yontan,Okinawa,29 Jan-27 May 46.
Again, NO where does it say that it was assigned to the European Theater. Nor does it say they trained other F/Grps.
These two books, Combat Units of the Air Force and Combat Squadrons of the Air Force In WW II should be at your local Public Library, or can be obtained from another Lending Public Library, if anyone wants verification.
Or....go to the Forums at the top of this page and click on Databases and input 507 under Groups, and 463 under Squadrons.....this will bring up the Maurer-Maurer excerpts for both.
This website is a wealth of information if used and used properly.
Jim :-)

Correction appreciated, sir.
As I am unable to document where the impression came from and I have reviewed Maurer, I am content to leave it at that.
Nevertheless, my uncle did serve in the 56th FG / 8th AF in Europe and was transferred, perhaps as a volunteer, to the 507th FG / 20th AF in the Pacific. Would that transfer have included his plane and was there a general call for volunteers when forming new units? Would he have had to leave England to re-train in Texas?

Apologies for this minor follow-up (which has no bearing on yourself or your experience):
why is the 507th FG found under the 7th AF in this forum and no listing of the 20th AF?

Hi :-) I have suggested that the Fighter Groups assigned to the 20th AF be shown at the bottom (or top) of the 20 AF Bomber Group listings.
The Pacific Theater was a hodgepodge of Bomb Groups, due to some of the Groups being runout of the Phillipines, and then ending in Australia, and back thorugh the various islands with the new Commands being formed, and their components being assgined back and forth from one to another and back again.....Also there were detachments assigned at various times to one or the other......it is very difficult to log all the changes, and make any sense of the entire picture.
Another facet was the 319th BG in the 12th,(B-26)for a very short period in the 15th in the Mediterranean9B-25) , then back to the US and then to the Pacific to the 7th AF.(A-26).
Then the 8th AF after VE Day in Europe, moving to the Pacific. Also the 20 AF and the 21 St, both in the Pacific. It is VERY confusing
The Photo Reconnaisance unints are th emost confusing, as there were Detachments sent worldwide with the parent unit remaining at one location.
Jim :-)

507 FG had some pilots that flew there first tour of duty in Europe. Lt. Walter Frederick KIA while in the 507FG ex 56FG 63FS Capt. Frank Collins ex 325FG 319FS Lt.Charles Reed ex 56FG 63 FS I sure that there is more. Had an old Air Combat magazine that had a small bit on the 507FG but can't find it. So 56th Ace your uncle more than likle flew his first tour in 56FG than went home and was reasigned to 507FG for his other tour. Well hope this helps but I know it has been 3 years.

The 301st FW ( 506,507,413,414FGs) was assigned to 20th AF but were attached to VII Fighter Command and Seventh AF; to all intents and purposes they were part of the Seventh. Nick
