497th photo collection and unit history available
I have access to a large photo collection and unit history of the 497th Bombardment Group Saipan. The Collection is located in the Tupelo Mississippi Veterans Museum. I have scanned some of the best pictures from the many available. Also included in the collection is Summary of Operations in Saipan and a complete Unit history written at the end of the war. The collection was donated by the family of Capt Hastewart. Who should I send the pictures that I scanned to? Sample photo attached DaveT

Dave, the original 497th Bomb Group crews were trained at Pratt Army Air Field. The Bombers On the Prairie Museum has some photos and data, but we would certainly be interested in additional material for our Museum collection and exhibits. For reference see this link. If you want to share some of your data, please contact me at b29museum@gmail.com Milt Martin, Archivist for B-29 Museum Inc., Pratt Kansas USA

The box (collection) is located at the Veterans Museum Tupelo Mississippi. I'm not sure that the Vet museum wants to part with the collection, but He was willing to allow me to copy it for free. Maybe if you ask him nicely and give a compelling reason. The collection was not on display, I asked to see some aircraft pictures and he brought out this big box. Give him a call and have a talk with him. The POC is Tony Lute 662-844-1515

Dave - I'd be very nterested to know if there are any pictures of the B-29 Wheel n' Deal A - 24 42-24604 from 870th of the 497th or A-33 The Shrimper...my uncle Edwin B. Tuenge was radarman most often with Capt. Paul Beard's Crew. Do you recall seeing anything about them or did you scan any that may have included them? Thanks for any help!

DaveT, I'm really glad to see your post. My grandfather, John Stuart Keeler, was a Flight Engineer in the 479th. I don't know which B-29 he was on, but I recently came into possession of some mission charts on which he wrote "Pilot: Price, Engineer: Keeler". I also now have some negatives that he took while there, the best of which are nice B-29 nose art shots. I would love to know which plane he was on, and since it would trouble you to see what there is about him, I would be happy to share his little collection of B-29 nose art photos with you. You can see them in my photo album here at this armyairforce.com site: http://forum.armyairforce...mp;apage=1&asort=3 I hope that link works. Otherwise, go to the Photo Galleries link on this page and search for member Frumius in the Photo Galleries. the images in the gallery are small, but I'd be happy to send you the high resolution versions of those images as a trade. And I'd still be in your debt. Here's a sample from the album:

My father, Lensey Loyd, was in the 497th Group, 870th Bomb Squad. Has anyone seen this name on any pictures? He was a radio operator and mechanic and went to Saipan Aug. 1945. Recently a deceased Navy seaman's g'daughter contacted me as her grandfather had been aboard a ship in the Fall of 1945 with the entire crew pulling AAF soldiers out of the ocean, wrist clasped to wrist, and my Dad's ID bracelet had gotten entangled in his sleeve and he had always wanted to find the soldier and return it. With his g'daughter's diligence and the internet, I received the bracelet 68 years later, just last week. Does anyone living know Lensey Loyd? He trained in Sioux Falls, SD.
