493 BS AZON crews - 07/04/2006 01:59:31 PM
Here is a photo from my dad's papers. I have a larger version (865KB) on my web page at http://www.georgiasouthern.edu/~dlowder/azon.jpg where you can make out individuals.
My dad, Everett R. (Red) Lowder is front row, 3rd from right.
So what does the (30-8) stand for?
Thanks.

Hi,

I am looking for information about Sgt. Samuel J. Simpson, who was a gunner on Larned's crew.
I own his painted A-2 jacket and am trying to find out more about him. The website for the 458th BG has what seems to be conflicting information. It says:

"Their tenure in the 458th was short. Two AZON crews along with members of a third, were transferred to the 388th Bombardment Group (H) at Knettishall in July 1944. The combat records and status of the crew with this group is unknown. Three gunners of Larned's crew, Sgt's Valenzuela, Simpson, and Johnson, remained with the 753rd Squadron and successfully completed their combat tours in December 1944 and were rotated back to the States in January 1945."

But it also says:

"The status of S/Sgt Richard F. Eberfeld, radio operator; and Sgt Samuel J. Simpson, gunner, is unknown."

I can say that the jacket has "Buck Rogers Boys" and 25 bombs painted on the back, which leads me to believe that he finished his tour. I am trying to ascertain if he stayed, along with the other gunners of Larned's crew, with the 458th, or if he transferred to the 388th.

Any information about him is appreciated!

Mel

Mel...You have posted to the 7th BG which served in the Pacific...the 458th BG and the 388th BG both served with the 8th AF in Europe, on the other side of the world.

Please post to the correct Bomb Group.

Azon (Azimuth Control) was used in the ETO, MTO and Pacific)

Jim :-)
