487th B Group 836th Squadron - Sgt. Neil J. Hurst

Greetings, I am the son of Sgt. Neil "Doc" Hurst of the 487th bomb group (H), who served with the 836th durring WWII. My father passed on in February of 1976 when I was just 18. I never had the opportunity to talk to him about his service to our country prior to his death. I recently came across an old military scrapbook of his that I thought was lost years ago. From some of the pictures of him I can see that he was part of the medical corps due to the pin on his left collar, and Sgt. stripes on the arm. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. It is my hope, that one of you fine folks may help me find that reason. Regards, Lee

Hello Lee, Good to see that you are interested in the service of your dad, and happy to read that his scrapbook survived. You may want to go to the website of the 487th Bomb Group at www.487thbg.org. There is a lot of information about the Group there. Also there is a board especially for those interested in the Group, and I am quite sure that all will be happy to see another 'second generation' member turn up. Of course, there are still veterans of the Group around. One of them is 'Doc' Isadore Lerner, who was the Squadron Surgeon of the 838th Bomb Squadron. Perhaps he will remember your dad, as of course the medical detachment of the Group (encompassing four Squadrons) wasn't that large, and all worked at the base hospital. I will be happy to talk further to you off this board, and will send you a PM. Kind regards Ivo de Jong
