463dBG(H) Insignia
-
02/08/2008 01:37:37 PM
Most everyone here is familiar with the unofficial 'Swoose' insignia of the 463dBG but I'm trying to establish whether or not the attached image was the official design for this unit during WWII. The insignia depicted in Air Force Combat Units Of World War II is of post war origin and consequently of no help to me. If anyone can provide some history to go along with this image I would be most appreciative. [image]local://upfiles/13750/8F77AFAA2AC643EEB2D454E13C6BC498.gif[/image]

The reason you recieved no reply from me was because our webmail for the 463rd site is crap. I sent replies 4 times and each time it failed. To answer your question: The above insignia is indeed the WW II era insignia for the 463rd Bombardment Group (Heavy). It was in effect until the Group was disbanded in late Sept. 1945. The other insignias for a 463rd Group are for the Airlift Wing or something such as that. I'm not that familiar with post-war names but it was not a bombing group, to my knowledge. As far as I know (and I'm not an expert on this subject), the above insignia was never used again after WW II. I apologize for not sending an answer more quickly but I thought that one of my earlier replies had gotten through. Obviously not!

Joel, No need to apologize for something out of your control. I really appreciate your getting back to me on this, your feedback has been most helpful. Bob
