Are you sure of the serial? according to my search on the web, the serial match with a P38.We have no information about your pane in the central file of the Royal Belgium Army Museum in Bruxelles.
May be we can get more information on the 305th BG web site.
    I keepan eye on it.

        Hello Moonman,

I've been busy to study this crash for a while and saw that you've mentioned the wrong crash date.

The B-17 of Major Brooks Jr took off from A-92 on the 21 of September 1945 at 20.33 Hrs for a routine night flight of approximately 5 hours. The B-17 crashed at 01.30 hrs on the 22 of September 1945 at Montenaken while trying to land under instrument conditions resulting in the complete destructions of the aircraft.
Different witnesses of Montenaeken saw the aircraft on fire just before the crash. An American soldier from an Ordenance Ammunation Company on patrol in Montenaeken didn't see the crash but declared he heard shortly before the crash the motors of the plane cut off and immediatly the crash afterwards.
The crash was investigated and it is believed that fire was a result of material failure. The most likely cause being a failure in the fuel system, electrical system or oxygen system is also a possibility.
A few inhabitants of Montenaeken went thru the fire and could get one of the crewmembers out of the plane..don't know the name of the crewmember. He was moaning and they called immediatly for a doctor and priest. He died of his wounds.
The crash was reported by telephone at 0320 Hrs at A-92.

        Regards,

        Alexander
