Hi and thanks for helping. Simon Holzschuh was on a mission to Krems (his 9th) on April 2, 1945 when he went down in 44-49927. He landed in Pecs, Hungary. According to Mom, Simon told her the crew removed and smashed the bomb sight, the gyros and some code? equipment prior to the russians taking them into custody. The crew burried the pieces of the smashed equipment in separate places to reduce the chance that any of it could be reconstituted. They we treated shabbily by the russians and were held in a rail car for weeks before being repatriated. There seems to be some photo's around of Russian soldiers guarding a B 24 at Pecs about that time -would it be the same bird? In the steamer trunk (along with all Simon's army paperwork since he enlisted) I found a small book (all in Hungarian) entitled PECS showing apparent points of interest. Published in 1941. Mom isnt sure but thinks he told her that they lost a couple engines and took a flak hit that shattered the cockpit windows. She didnt know if it was before the target or if they had to drop the bombs before. She remembers Si telling her that the two pilot both thought they were hit and goners, but niether actually were wounded (just hugh bruises from whatever pieces hit their flak suits) We alsways wondered about the war, and what went on: never dreamed there was acommunity out here dedicated to archiving and preserving it. How wonderful! We have tons of documents to catalog - let me know if we can help shed any light out there. Thanks! Wayne
