43rd patch
-
09/18/2006 05:58:31 PM
I have a question about the insignia for the 43rd bomb group. I've only seen one picture of a WWII era version of the patch and it's small and not real clear. I think it shows the main colors as black and yellow. I've seen 1950's versions that are blue and yellow. I've been to the 43rd website and they show a modern design that is black and yellow, so do any of you guys know if it was blue and yellow or black and yellow? Thanks, Janet

Janet, The official color (for the approved patch dated Jan 42) is azure. I asked a friend who is an experienced collector - he has seen one that is either a dark, dark blue or possibly black so he cannot give a 100% answer. But as the official version is azure, I'd have to go along w/ that. Gary

These are very hard to find. I've been searching the internet for months and only found one source that does reproductions and they are $68 each. OUCH! I'm going to a funeral for a crew member of the plane "Here T'is" on July 7th and would really like these patches to honor this airman.

Janet....Excerpt from Air Force Combat Units of WW II by Maurer-Maurer. Insigne. Shield: Per fess nebuly or and azure, a drop bomb counterchanged. Motto: Willing, Ready:(Approved 31 Jan 1942) It appears that the colors are orange and azure (or and azure) A copy of Air Force Combat Units of WW II by Maurer-Maurer should be available in your Public LIbrary, and if not, can be obtained through the interservice lending of the Public Library. Here is the URL for a PDF copy of the Combat Units of the Air Force in WW II. https://www.airforcehistory.hq.af.mil/Publications/fulltext/af_combat_units_wwii.pdf The insigna is shown in black and white..(no color)...a check with a person familiar with the wording of the description may be necessary to arrive at the correct insignia colors. Jim :-)

Thanks Jim. The PDF was helpful. It's to bad nobody (affordably) reproduces this patch. Maybe someday. Thanks again, Janet

Unfortunately it is quite expensive to create a design for embroidery due to the time and digitizing process. My 5th AF patch, 3" in diameter, has over 10,000 stitches and took many hours at the computer to digitize. To digitize a design for a 5" patch, by a qualified company is probably in the area of $50.00 for a 4 color simple design. However, there are some out there so keep looking.

Thanks Jerry. One of my cousins who works for the government, had the patch reproduced by some "locals" when she was overseas. The patches aren't perfect but they give a pretty good representation. One of these days I'll research companies to do a more exact reproduction. Janet
