On several websites, including 487thbg.org, and also in Roger Freeman's "The B-17 Flying Fortress Story" the crash site of B-17G
43-38033 on 9 Feb 1945 is given as Rennes, France. Mission was to Weimar, pilot was Lt Budd Wentz.
It seems however that the actual crash site was at
Rienne near Gedinne in Belgium, very close to the French border.
I noticed on this subforum that there has been some discussion about (another) crash landing of Wentz later in April 1945, but the story on
http://home.earthlink.net/~tom.mccrary/Down_and_Out_in_Belgium-1945.pdf somehow makes sense, if only for the geographical position of Rennes, France in relation to target area deep in Germany and home base, plus other elements given by Wentz in story.
So "Rennes" sould read "Rienne"? Distance between them is over 375 miles/600 kms.
